Courage Reins Equine-Assisted Therapies Our mission is to improve the lives of individuals with physical, mental, and emotional challenges through equine-assisted therapies. Long, long hours.

At first glance the assumption could be made that the only group benefiting are the rider/participants when, in fact, so much more is going on. No person, no animal comes to Courage Reins without something almost magically happening. The child with something to look forward to, bragging rights at the lunch table about an upcoming horseshow she will be in, that quiet confidence gained as she partners with a horse ten times her size. The parents, probably always tired parents, whose hearts ache for their child to have as much from life as can be squeezed. To sit alongside another parent and share stories, possible resources and just be a cheerleader instead of the nurse, physical therapist and constant companion
The tireless volunteers. Here in the heat, in the freezing cold. Here to greet a new horse, here to mourn the passing of old friends. Earning lessons with their service only to pass them along to a student in need. This is not an easy place to serve. Sometimes you are asked to give pass the point of comfort. You become a better person. You will learn lessons that can only be had through the sacrifice of yourself. You will be forever marked by the experience if you let it. The staff, most having already proved themselves as volunteers and coming to us with a variety of different equine backgrounds, to serve our special population. All having given so much more in time and effort then they've been paid. These are 110% employees with the endurance and strength to serve day after day, year after year. People use to putting the needs of others ahead of themselves. The horses. These gentle creatures seem to know and understand that they have a job, they have a purpose. Simply put we couldn't do it without them. And so we care for them to our best ability because they are truly our partners in all this.

Meet Alisa Graham, our new Volunteer Services Manager!
Alisa brings more than 30 years of experience helping individuals discover their abilities, build confidence, and find meaningful connections within their communities. Her career has focused on supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including leadership roles in Utah's disability services programs and 10 years as a Regional Program Coordinator with Special Olympics Utah.

Throughout her career, Alisa has believed that everyone has something valuable to contribute and that some of life's greatest opportunities for growth come through connection, encouragement, and shared experiences. Her commitment to service also includes coaching with the Real Salt Lake Unified Soccer Team and humanitarian projects supporting the Navajo Nation.
After moving to Utah in 1993 to attend Utah State University, Alisa developed a love for the outdoors. Her passion for wildlife photography introduced her to Utah's Onaqui wild horses in 2020, inspiring her involvement in wild horse advocacy and adoption. She now serves on the Board of Directors for Red Bird Trust, supporting the conservation and well-being of the Onaqui wild horses.

Alisa and her wife, Paula, share a love for animals and have welcomed several horses into their family, including adopted Onaqui Mustangs. These experiences have strengthened her appreciation for patience, trust, and connection.
In 2022, Alisa began volunteering at Courage Reins, where she discovered the perfect connection between her lifelong dedication to helping people and her growing passion for horses. Her involvement grew into facilitating equine-assisted activities focused on personal growth, recovery, and leadership before stepping into her new role in August 2026.

Alisa is passionate about creating an environment where volunteers feel welcomed, appreciated, and empowered to make a difference. She believes that when people come together with a shared purpose, remarkable things can happen.
Outside of Courage Reins, Alisa treasures time with Paula, their animals, family, and close friends. She also enjoys hiking, camping, exploring the outdoors, and photographin

At Courage Reins, we see every day how much we can learn from horses. Through patience, connection, and trust, they create opportunities for us to better understand ourselves, build confidence, and discover strengths we didn't know we had.
Whether it's through Therapeutic Riding, Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy, or simply spending time alongside a horse, these incredible animals remind us that courage doesn't always mean taking big leaps. Sometimes, it's simply taking that next step, even when it's hard.

What has a horse taught you? We'd love to hear your stories in the comments! ❤️🐴

At Courage Reins, our Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) program offers a unique, hands-on approach to mental health care. Working alongside horses in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment can help individuals:

• Build confidence and self-awareness
• Develop healthy coping skills
• Strengthen communication and relationships
• Explore emotions and process trauma
• Manage stress and anxiety

And the best part? No riding experience is needed! EAP sessions are completely ground-based and guided by a licensed mental health therapist and an equine specialist.

Our Mental Health team is currently accepting new clients for both Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy and traditional in-office counseling!
