Marker Words are the secret sauce…

If you aren’t properly conditioning your marker words or you don’t have an intentional marker word system, you’re going to have a tough time training your dog.

Properly conditioned marker words allow you to clearly communicate to your dog when they did the right thing and what thing exactly earned them their reward.

Without that clarity, they’ll just keep offering behaviors or looking at you confused when you give them a command.

This is my specific reward marker system, and it doesn’t have to be the same as yours, but you DO need to be intentional with your markers and when/how you use them.

Is this real life? 🥰

I have so many amazing clients who care so deeply for their amazing pups! 🙏🏻

And while this career choice definitely takes an emotional toll at times, and can be frustrating to the extreme..

The pros still far outweigh the cons.

I wouldn’t go back to any of my old jobs. I love what I do 🙃

If they’re over threshold, they’re not learning.

Build the behavior you want from them under threshold and THEN after plenty of reps you can start to gradually increase the challenge.

If your dog isn’t taking treats, isn’t playing, is super alert or tuning you out completely, if they’re acting anxious or having an explosive reaction - then it’s too much too soon.

1. Practice an alternative behavior
2. Increase challenge while keeping them under threshold
