Please welcome our newest walking buddy: Zeke, full name Ezekiel McSchmoo. 🐾

Haley and Mabrey met Zeke for his very first walk on Monday, and he loved every minute of it. Plenty of sniffs were had, which is only fair on a brand new route.

Like every dog we care for, Zeke’s family got a report card as soon as the walk wrapped up: photos, a note from his walkers, and a quick checklist covering potty, fresh water, harness off, and safely back in his area.

We know quite a few doggos who prefer 16 sniffs per minute 👃🐶 A steady, controlled sniff walk is always better than a short, fast-paced walk. Does your dog enjoy a sniff walk?

According to PDSA research, a dog's perfect walk is 67 minutes long with 16 dedicated sniff stops along the way. Most owners report cutting walks significantly shorter and pulling their dogs away from sniffing to keep moving, which veterinary experts say is the opposite of what dogs actually need.

Sniffing activates the brain far more than running does for dogs, meaning a slow walk with plenty of stops is more restorative than a fast one with none. The walk your dog is trying to take is not the same walk you are trying to finish.

Please help us welcome Mabrey, who officially joined us on Friday as our newest pet caretaker. Like the rest of our crew, she's background-checked, bonded, insured, and CPR-certified.

She hit the ground running. On her very first visit with Mr. Prato, he stayed calm and quiet in his crate when she walked in, then celebrated their first walk together by peeing on her pant leg. 🤣 She laughed it off, and the two of them spent the rest of the visit soaking up sunshine, sniffs, and back scratches.

Over at Coco and Abbee's, the girls came spilling out the door to greet her. Coco scarfed down dinner before Abbee was even halfway done, while Abbee made it clear she'd rather watch Mabrey pet Coco than get any pets herself. Mabrey's take? It only makes her more excited to eventually win Abbee's love. That's exactly the kind of patience we look for.

Their mom Peggy summed it up after that first visit: "WOW, what a great visit!!"

There's a moment we wait for with every new dog, and Prato just hit it.

Prato used to ti**le when Haley came through the door. That's common for a dog who's still getting to know a new person. This week, Haley reported that he's stopped completely.

Now he comes out of his crate and gives her a full sniff-down, catching a whiff of every dog she visited before him 😂 Once he's satisfied, it's harness on and out the door to check out every tree on the block.

That kind of trust doesn't happen by accident. It happens because the same familiar person shows up, week after week, and learns exactly how your dog likes things done.

When life pulls you away from home, your dogs shouldn't have to feel it.

Coco and Abbee's mom is out of state taking care of family, so Haley has been stopping by three times a day to keep the girls' routine just the way they know it.

This morning Haley was greeted with excited tail wags at the door 😂 Breakfast came first (the girls agree it's the best meal of the day), then a wander through the cool, misty morning. They wrapped up with the morning show and a small treat 📺

Last night was a sleepy one, but they still rallied for a quick trip out in the drizzle and caught the end of the evening news with Haley before bed.

Their mom wrote back that she's proud of her girls and grateful someone is loving on them while she can't be there. That's the part of this job we never take lightly. When a family is going through something hard, taking one thing off their plate matters. 🐾

It's Friday, which means it's time for our favorite thing: report card highlights! ⭐️

Here's a peek at what our walkers saw this week:

🐶 Silvio greeted Haley with a smooch on another fantastically cool morning. Best little buddy status: confirmed.
🐶 Jasmine was up and saying hello the second Haley walked in, and she was very ready for her meal.
🐶 Charlie and Konza were ready and waiting for their afternoon potty walk. Konza is 13 and still running the show 💕
🐶 Major was his usual cutie patootie self on his morning visit.
🐶 Jax got a visit after a little time apart, and Haley was just as happy to see him as he was to see her.

And one from Caroline: after her first chemistry exam of the semester, she headed straight to see the pups. We're pretty sure it was good for everyone involved.

Some weeks, the walk isn't really a walk.

Clover is a very high-energy doodle. For the past two weeks, she hasn't been able to go on her usual walks after injuring her hind end. For a dog who normally wants to go, go, go, that's a big adjustment, for her and for her people.

So we're adjusting with her. Her mom asked us to start with 5-minute walks and finish each visit with backyard time, and that's exactly what we're doing. Yesterday Haley walked Clover and her brother Mackey separately. Clover figured out that walking slower felt better and relaxed into it. She was a little wobbly by the end of the block, so back home they went for yard time, where she had a successful potty break 🎉

Haley reports every detail back to Clover's mom: how she walked, how she moved, how she seemed. That's what helps her family decide on next steps. The plan now is to keep the walks short and build up as she's ready.

This is what we mean when we say we're part of the fur family. When your dog's needs change, their care should too.

Fall finally showed up in Indiana this week, drizzle and all ☔

The dogs are loving it. Cooler, cloudy days mean nobody's rushing home to escape the heat. So our walkers are letting the pups set the pace and sniff every bush, mailbox, and tree they want.

A couple of highlights from today's report cards:

🐾 Guillermo and Ruthie didn't let the drizzle slow them down one bit. Guillermo pulled out his infamous "lawnmower routine," and Ruthie happened to be right behind him. She got showered in grass. Haley says it was still a very pleasant walkie.

🐾 Yoshi put his harness on without any grief today (a rare win!) and spent his walk investigating freshly cut tree limbs for as long as he saw fit.

Also spotted on the sheebs' route: a Halloween skeleton throwing up green liquid. Very festive. Very fun 💚
