This is our preferred way to teach dogs to walk in a heel that we don’t have time to teach in classes but have been working on with our drop off dogs.

The method is simple! Start walking with your dog. Any time they check in with you, click and reward them in heel position. It doesn’t matter where they are when they check in as long as you always reward them in the proper position. Eventually they’ll choose to stay there all on their own.

We will be getting a challenge up in our Free Community going in even more depth on this after the Labor Day Weekend so you can work on this with your dog at home! Stay tuned for more details on that ✨

Practicing patio behavior during groups today! We had some dogs holding down stays while other ones weaved between them on a loose leash. The dogs from both activities were able to stay calm through their own tasks!

Building confidence and encouraging dogs to make their own decisions is always the number one priority! Getting them to actually perform a behavior is just the little reward at the end of the process, which can sometimes take days or even weeks, but is always worth the time and patience!

We love working exercises into our weekly community walks like this. After they have a chance to settle in and their adrenaline levels drop, even excitable dogs are able to walk like this in close proximity to other dogs calmly!

Fun exercise during our drop off program yesterday!We love setting up opportunities for dogs to offer behaviors. It encourages them to think independently and builds their confidence when they realize their own decision making produces a reward.
