The vet was here to see quite a few residents last week, including pigs Rudy and Michael. Both needed to be sedated to have hoof work done, and Rudy got imaging and a tusk trim. We were glad to hear that it appears his hoof infection is clearing up!

Rudy used to live at a petting zoo as a piglet. After the season ended, he was intended to be sold for slaughter. That’s the fate of many farmed animals who are used in petting zoos and animal encounters—once they’re no longer a baby, they’re not “cute” or useful to the business anymore. Fortunately, Rudy was rescued and has lived here ever since. As he’s grown older, he’s needed continued supportive care, the kind that farms just don’t tend to provide at all. We encourage you to think about Rudy next time you see a petting zoo or “animal encounter” opportunity. Those animals might be in a worse position than you think, and the best thing to do is to not support those businesses.

Tai and Dionne just want some shuteye, but there’s too much to be done around here when it’s nice out! Improving coops and yards, fixing fences, and hauling compost around the Sanctuary is a nonstop effort! Luckily, even with some hammering in the background these two rescued turkeys can still enjoy the afternoon sun ❤️
