Severe weather on Long Island can turn into more than an inconvenience when you have birds, reptiles, rabbits, guinea pigs, or chinchillas at home.

A long power outage can affect heat, cooling, lighting, air quality, food storage, and the equipment some exotic pets depend on every day. That’s why I always recommend having the plan figured out before a storm is already on the way.

- Every pet should have a secure, species-appropriate carrier ready.
- Keep your exotic vet and emergency clinic information somewhere you can get to it without power or Wi-Fi.
- Have backup supplies for the things your particular animals rely on
- Know where you would go if staying home stopped being safe

Most pet sitters are comfortable with dogs and cats. They might be willing to care for parrots, budgies, or other birds, but willing and experienced are two different things.

Your parrot has a specific diet, a light schedule that affects their hormones and behavior, and a respiratory system so sensitive that the wrong cleaning product can cause a medical emergency. That is not a job for someone learning as they go.

I provide in-home bird sitting in Hicksville and Central Nassau County for parrots, cockatiels, conures, macaws, and other companion bird species. Every visit includes a wellness check, detailed care notes, and a photo update. My background working alongside exotic veterinarians gives me a clinical eye for the subtle changes that can signal a bird needs attention.

I am so excited to share this.

Dr. Gabby Zonenshine has launched Wandering Wings Veterinary, a concierge mobile practice devoted exclusively to birds and exotic animals. She will be serving Long Island.

Until now, Long Island has not had a mobile vet serving private bird and exotic pet owners. That gap has been a real challenge for owners who struggle with the stress of transporting their animals to a clinic.

Dr. Gabby and I have connected, and we will be supporting each other in our work to provide compassionate, expert care to birds and exotics in the Long Island area.

I will be sharing more about Wandering Wings in the coming months. This is really great for our community!

Your cat is communicating with you all day long. Through their appetite, their litter box, the way they move, and whether or not they greet you at the door.

During every in-home sitting visit, I do a quiet wellness check before I touch a food bowl or scoop the litter box.

I watch how your cat moves, how much food and water are left from the previous visit, and what the litter box is telling me about how they are feeling.

Cats are masters at hiding discomfort. By the time many cats look obviously sick, they have been feeling unwell for much longer.

Senior cats need an even closer eye. Research shows the vast majority of cats over 12 have some degree of arthritis, but most owners and even veterinarians don't catch it early.

Leopard geckos are one of the most popular pet reptiles on Long Island. They are small, relatively calm when handled regularly, and they do not require the level of space or equipment that some other reptile species demand.

But a leopard gecko that is set up properly and monitored by someone who knows what to look for can live well past 15 years. One that is not can develop problems that are preventable but hard to reverse once they take hold.

The biggest care mistakes I see are with the enclosure. Temperature gradient, substrate choice, humidity management, and lighting all have to be right.

Loose substrates like sand are common culprits in impaction cases. Retained shed from a missing humid hide can cost a gecko its toes.

Calcium supplementation is also critical. Feeder insects should be dusted before every feeding. Metabolic bone disease is one of the most common conditions I see in captive geckos, and it is almost entirely preventable with the right setup.

If you are looking for a reptile sitter, ask whether they understand lighting and temperature management, whether they check for stuck shed, look for changes in weight or appetite, and if they monitor droppings.

Those are the basics that separate species-aware care from general pet sitting.

Summer brings more ways for a cat to end up outside, exposed, or missing than any other time of year. Open windows, propped doors, guests coming and going, and screens that are not as secure as they look.

The 4th of July weekend is the single highest period for lost pets in the United States, with shelters reporting a 30 to 60 percent increase in intake between July 4 and July 6. That spike is driven by fireworks, but the broader summer risk lasts well beyond one weekend.

Microchipped cats are returned 38.5 percent of the time compared to 1.8 percent without a chip.

But about 40 percent of microchips in sheltered animals have outdated contact information. If your cat is chipped, take five minutes to verify your registration is current.

A breakaway collar with an ID tag provides the fastest way to identify your cat as owned without needing a scanner.

On Long Island, where rescues and TNR groups are managing large community cat populations, a cat with no collar and no registered chip can easily be assumed to be feral or a stray.

If your cat is overdue on vaccines or isn't microchipped, summer is the wrong season to wait.

Today is World Snake Day.

My first pets were fire belly toads when I was in first or second grade. That was the start of my love of reptiles and amphibians.

Going into eighth grade, I visited family in Arizona for the first time. My uncle took me to a reptile expo where I held a Mexican Kingsnake, and other beautiful snakes, for the first time.

That trip really inspired me. It guided me towards the animals I work with today, the way I think about species-specific care, and the reason I take reptile boarding and sitting as seriously as I do. It all traces back to those early moments.

Animal control facilities across the country report a 30 to 60 percent increase in lost pet intake between July 4 and July 6. For pet birds in particular, the risk is serious.

Birds startle fast and panic explosively. A panicked bird can thrash inside its cage and injure itself on bars, toys, or perches. Fireworks are unpredictable, and the days around the 4th tend to be the worst because the noise comes from every direction at random hours.

Helpful ways you can protect your bird include:

- Keeping your bird's cage away from windows during the holiday weekend.
- Covering the cage if your bird responds well to covering.
- Closing every window and door before the noise starts, and make sure screens are fully latched.
- Checking that your pet's microchip registration is current and that you have recent, clear photos on hand in case of an emergency.

And if your bird has out-of-cage time outdoors, the 4th is a good day to keep them indoors and secure.

If you are hosting guests, remind them to close doors behind them. Visitors who are not used to birds in the house do not think about it.

A little bit of preparation now can make this a safe, stress-free holiday for your whole household, feathered friends included.
