Heartworm disease is a serious infection caused by parasites called Dirofilaria immitis. It spreads through mosquito bites and mainly affects dogs, but cats can get it too. The worms live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels.
Common Signs in Dogs

* Coughing
* Tired easily after playing
* Difficulty breathing
* Weight loss
* Swollen belly (in severe cases)

How Pets Get It

1. A mosquito bites an infected animal.
2. The mosquito carries tiny larvae.
3. When it bites another pet, the larvae enter the body.
4. Over several months, the worms grow and travel to the heart and lungs.
