Adolescence can make really good dog owners feel like they are failing.
In reality, you are raising a dog through one of the most challenging developmental stages.

Progress here is not always obvious, but it is happening.
If you are showing up, being consistent, and trying to do right by your dog, that matters more than perfection.

What is one small win you have had recently? I would love to hear it.

When people hear “build trust with your dog,” they often think it means being softer or more passive.
What I actually focus on is clarity.

Dogs build trust when
Expectations are consistent
Feedback makes sense to them
They are set up to succeed more than they are set up to fail

Trust is not about letting everything go. It is about helping your dog understand how to navigate the world with you.

If things feel confusing or inconsistent right now, your dog is probably feeling that too.

Engagement does not come from asking your dog to ignore the world.
It comes from showing them that working with you is worth it.

These are all small, realistic ways to start building that without overcomplicating things.

If you find yourself repeating cues over and over, you are not alone. It happens a lot during adolescence.

One thing I work on with clients is follow through.
Say the cue once
Give your dog a moment to respond
If they do not, help them complete it instead of repeating it

This helps your dog learn that cues actually mean something and builds clarity really quickly.

If this is something you struggle with, I can help you clean it up.

May always feels like the season of selective hearing.
Your dog hears you. They just have a lot of other opinions right now.

More smells, more distractions, more confidence, and sometimes less interest in listening.
It can feel frustrating, but it is also a really normal part of adolescence.

Tell me what your dog is currently “ignoring” you about. I promise you are not the only one.

If your dog feels more interested in the environment than in you right now, you are not alone. I see this all the time in adolescence.

A few simple ways I start rebuilding engagement
Use meals for training instead of a bowl
Reward check ins on walks, even the small ones
Keep training sessions short and actually fun
Stop before your dog loses interest

You do not need an hour. You need consistency.
What is one way you are currently working on engagement with your dog?

One thing I wish more people understood about adolescent dogs is that their brain development is not done just because their body looks grown.
The part of the brain responsible for impulse control, decision making, and emotional regulation is still developing. That means your dog might absolutely know a behavior… and still struggle to follow through on it when it actually matters.

I tend to focus less on testing dogs and more on helping them be successful.
That might look like
Keeping sessions shorter
Reducing distractions when introducing something new
Reinforcing check ins and engagement more intentionally

If your dog feels inconsistent right now, it is not random. It is developmental.
And we can work with that instead of fighting it.

Spring can be a tricky time. More distractions, more energy, and sometimes more frustration on both ends of the leash.
If you are feeling a little stuck right now, I get it.
If you could get help with one thing, whether it is listening outside, impulse control, or just general chaos, what would it be?
Drop it below or message me. I am always happy to help you figure out a starting point.

When dogs feel extra, I do not try to shut it down completely. I try to give it somewhere to go.
That might look like a short structured walk where I am guiding them a bit more.
It might look like a quick training session to get their brain working.
Or even just letting them sniff and explore in a more controlled way.
If we do not give that energy an outlet, it usually finds its own… and it is not always what we want.
If your dog feels like a whirlwind right now, what have you been trying so far?
