Does your puppy like to pull ahead on walks?

When your walks start right beside you, with your puppy checking in one moment, then darting ahead the next, try this:

When they hit the end of the leash, call them and guide them back to you.

Lure them into Heel position beside you again.

IMPORTANT: Have a piece of their food or treat in hand! Getting them smelling that yummy treat, and get their focus again!

Reward them when they’re in the right position, and continue your loose-leash walk!

NOTE: You may (most likely WILL) need to reset your puppy several times on the walk, depending on the distractions around them, their ability to focus on you, and their skill level with walks/heel. Keep at it and this will improve over time! 🐶

If your young pup is scared of new places you can practice structured exposure.

This is intentionally helping them get comfortable in different environments by building their confidence.

Try using a sling (for younger/smaller pups), so they’re close to you, but still adds a little distance so they can feel comfortable enough but not coddled.

Stay further back to get them for comfortable, and get closer as they get better. (It may not happen the first time.)

Take your time and build them up at their pace! No forcing, no over-petting/soothing. Remain a strong, supportive leader for them. 🐶

Most young puppies DON’T give a signal they need to potty, and if they do somewhat tell you when they can’t hold it any longer, you may accidentally be causing some frustration there.

Having regular times you take them (aka a potty schedule) and making it part of a routine they understand, can help make potty training more predictable and less stressful — for both of you! (And can help when you’re potty training kids — or teenagers 😅 — too.)

If your puppy is p*eing inside right after they’ve gone outside, check these things:

- water intake - are they getting too much?
- did they actually give a full p*e and empty their bladder, or just a little bit?
- are they running around/getting lots of activity shortly after going potty?
- do they actually have a need to go?
- do you have them on leash and closely monitoring?

Once you go through this checklist, then we can identify what to tweak to stop the after potty break accidents. 🐶

Separation anxiety + reactivity are the 2 most common problems we see — especially lately — with the popularity of mini dachshunds.

They are determined, they are low to the ground, and they can have lots of energy, making them more difficult to train.

When it comes to reactivity, being able to work with a trainer who can identify those trigger and teach you counters to those triggers will be the greatest benefit to you and your pup.

And if you’re looking to get a mini dachshund, there are many wonderful, reputable breeders who don’t compromise to keep up with demand when a breed is popular! Check and speak with them, who can also help match you with a pup with a temperament and energy level that matches more of your lifestyle. 🐶

Even though puppies are *supposed* to sleep 16-20 hours a day, some pups can seem to have endless amounts of boundless energy, making it difficult for them to settle and relax — when they SHOULD be tired!
