Ep. 246: How to Manage Jumping, Barking & Nipping!

If you have a new puppy you are probably dealing with at least one (but most likely all three!) of these issues: jumping, barking and nipping.

It’s what puppies do, so it’s “normal” but that doesn’t mean you have to just let it go and hope it passes and they grow out of it. (Newsflash: they usually get worse when not addressed vs better!)

In our latest Ask A Puppy Trainer Show, Episode 246, Bethany and Sparky give their tips on what you can start doing right now to manage and improve this behavior!

Check out the time stamps to find what other puppyhood help you’d like answers on and join us every Wed at 1pm PT on IG to ask your questions live! (Or submit them early via DM ☺️)

Full episodes can be viewed on our YouTube channel every Monday and listened to in our new official AAPTS Podcast! To get notified when it’s ready, sign up for our VIP (Very Important Puppy) list through the link in our bio and we’ll email it to you directly!

There’s A LOT of prep work that comes with teaching your puppy how to walk on leash without pulling.

Don’t slap a leash on them, take them outside and expect them NOT to pull.

Instead:

Start indoors (controlled environment, minimal distractions)

Teach them “Let’s Go”

Get them to used to focusing on you and checking in with you — if they can’t do this inside, they won’t be able to do this outside!

Build your relationship and their muscle memory with this, then start adding in more distractions and moving outdoors.

Then transition “Let’s Go” into Heel.

Lots of steps, but there’s no shortcut to a loose-leash walk, if that’s what your goal is.

Be patient, take you time, and I your puppy isn’t quite ready yet, don’t pressure them. Keep practicing and they’ll get there soon. 🐶

Ep. 245: Does Your Puppy Bite You When You Pet Them?

Ahhh the dream of relaxing on your couch with your puppy and petting them as you chill out together…

Be honest: it doesn’t QUITE work out that well does it?!

Oh the idea is SO good, but there’s some problems here — puppies are excitable, they often don’t want to rest long (and haven’t learned to settle on command yet) and they get overstimulated very quickly. So when you pet them (and perhaps for a tiny bit too long) they usually start biting — and HARD!

If this is happening to you, you’ll want to tune into this week’s Ask A Puppy Trainer Show, Episode 245, where Bethany and Sparky go over why this happens and what you can do about it.

HOW to wean off using food/treat rewards:

1) increase pauses before giving

2) mix up when you give the food

3) use the same luring motions with your hands, but WITHOUT food in them

The goal is to deliver food in ways they can’t anticipate it, so they never know what to expect.

WHEN to do this:

When things are EASY!

Don’t try this when things are really hard for your pup.

Add food back in when you are teaching something new, or are working on something difficult, and reward every time.🐶

Most puppies DON’T tell you when they need to potty! Using a crate “potty” schedule or having them tethered to you on leash is the way to have them learn when and where to go through repetition. Then you may start picking up on your pup’s natural cues, and associating a word with it.

Does your puppy “tell” you when you need to go? Let us know what they do in the comments! We always like hearing about your puppy’s little quirks. 🐶

The 3 best times/ways we like to give puppies their breakfast (in order of favorite to least favorite):

1) As part of their first training session or walk in the morning (ie. They’re working for their food and you’re hand-feeding them)

2) After their morning walk or morning activity

3) Before their morning walk — if you need to because of your schedule and/or you need a quick p**p

Ep. 244: Why NOT To Redirect When Your Puppy Bites

One of the parts of puppyhood new puppy parents seem to be the most unprepared for is: puppy biting. Ouch. And that’s because you usually don’t know what you’re in for (or just how bad your puppy might be) until you’re in the thick of things.

Sure redirecting your puppy to a toy can temporarily distract them…but it won’t be long until they’re at it again! So what can you do to actually get your puppy to STOP biting? In this week’s Ask A Puppy Trainer Show, Episode 244, Bethany and Sparky share their techniques you can try right now to teach your puppy not to bite you.

Check out the time stamps to find what other puppyhood help you’d like answers on and join us every Wed at 1pm PT on IG to ask your questions live! (Or submit them early via DM ☺️)
