🎉 Please join us in giving a warm Hermiston Veterinary Clinic welcome to our newest veterinarian, Dr. Holly MacInnes! 🩺🐾

We are excited to welcome Dr. Holly MacInnes to the Hermiston Veterinary Clinic team!

Dr. MacInnes grew up in a small town outside of Sacramento, California, where her passion for animals began at a young age. She spent her childhood riding horses and participating in FFA, raising hogs, lambs, and a steer—experiences that helped shape her love for both companion and large animals.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Oregon State University in 2020, followed by a Master of Science in Veterinary Biomedical Sciences from Kansas State University in 2022. She then returned to Oregon State University to complete her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.

When she’s not caring for patients, Dr. MacInnes enjoys exploring the outdoors with her Heeler, spending time with her husband, traveling, and scuba diving whenever she gets the chance.

We are thrilled to have Dr. MacInnes as part of our team and know she’ll provide compassionate, high-quality care to the pets and families of our community.

💙 Help us give Dr. MacInnes a warm welcome in the comments below! 🐶🐱🐴

In early June, USDA APHIS announced the detection of New World Screwworm in a 3-week-old calf in Zavala County, Texas. This was the first detection of NWS in the United States since the 1960s. Additional cases have since been identified in calves, a dog and a goat.

New World screwworm (NWS, Cochliomyia hominivorax) can infest any warm-blooded animal, including livestock, pets, wildlife, occasionally birds, and, rarely, humans. Screwworms are fly larvae (maggots) that burrow into flesh and feed on the living tissue of animals. If not treated, infestation can be fatal.

The Oregon Department of Agriculture is restricting the movement of animals from any area that is actively infested with NWS, and requiring enhanced inspection and preventative treatments prior to entry into Oregon.

While this should not cause excess alarm for Oregon animal owners, it's always a good idea for owners to be aware and watch for signs of any illness in their animals.

Signs of NWS:

* Maggots or white egg masses in wounds or body openings, such as the nose, ears, genitalia, or the navel of newborn animals
* Foul odor or the smell of decay
* Signs of pain including irritated behavior, depression, not eating, and animals isolating themselves from other animals or people

Treat for ticks and keep pets on flea/tick preventives year round to avoid open wounds.

Immediately report any suspicious wounds, maggots, or infestations to your veterinarian or the Oregon State Veterinarian’s office at 503-986-4711.

The US food supply is safe. NWS is not a food safety issue. It spreads only when an NWS fly lays eggs in a wound, not through meat, poultry, or dairy products.

🔔Hello all! Just a reminder for fireworks season since it’s right around the corner! 🎆

Many pets experience anxiety and fear during fireworks displays, if you think your pet may need anxiety medication for the upcoming Fourth of July celebrations, now is the time to plan ahead.

Please remember that veterinarians are only able to prescribe medications for pets that have a current doctor-patient relationship, which requires an up-to-date exam.

📅 If your pet is due for their annual exam or has not been seen recently, please call us soon to schedule an appointment. Waiting until the last minute may limit our ability to prescribe medications before the holiday.

Give your furry family members the best chance at a calm and comfortable holiday by planning ahead. 🐾❤️
