If you have time to lean, you have time to.... train?

You don't have to dedicate hours each day, just set aside 20 minutes a day to do some solid work.

Riot ended her night with some more work on the position box to keep solidifying her body awareness.

Worked with Sandor on sending him out to jumps today. He's definitely improving!
Now he wants space on the rug to cool off, and Riot would like you all to know how hard her life is during this tragic time. 🙄💔

One aspect of attending college that I have truly appreciated is the opportunity it has provided me to develop my research skills.

I love having the opportunity to advance in my knowledge about dog training methods, behavioral issues, and deep diving into what makes a dog's brain tick.

This week I've been working on a research project on reproductive anatomy and stumbled upon these interesting articles. I figured I would share!

Enjoy!

Sandor enjoyed an agility clinic, Riot not so much. 😂

I got some good knowledge and feedback on boosting Sandor's confidence in the ring while Riot got some good socialization and more experience on learning to settle.

A little bit of leash work, a little bit of scary teeter.🐾

While Riot is working on becoming a detection dog, she also has big plans of doing agility as well.

It'll be the perfect combination of mental and physical stimulation. ❤️

While I'm not expecting her to do the full teeter for a few months yet... I'm exposing her to the texture, height and noise of it (not with her on it just sitting near it) hitting the ground.

She's also been very nicely working on her sit box, feet placement, and rear end awareness.

Riot is on her way to being a well rounded pup!

While the cat's away, the mice will play, or so they say.😂
Riot was taking her afternoon snooze so Sandor and I got to play!

Man, I forget how amazing this boy is sometimes. He picked up scent work in just a couple months and ran with it! He's even started to pull me into the search, he's so excited to work!

So excited for our first trial next month!! ❤️

Anyway, enjoy these photos of Sandor being a rockstar! 🤩

P.S. please dont ask why we have so many snowblowers, that was a surprise to me as well. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Dog Training Myths We Need to Leave in the Past 🧠❌
Let’s talk about a major misconception in the dog world.
Some people think modern, reward-based trainers are "sissies" who just wave cookies, coax dogs, and let bad behavior slide. There is no fairy dust or singing kumbaya over here. We aren't begging dogs for compliance or singing songs to get them to stop barking. R+ training isn't about being soft—it’s an active, high-level strategy where the handler holds all the cards. They think you need heavy tools like shock or prong collars to be an assertive leader.
They couldn't be more wrong. ❌

True assertiveness isn't about intimidation or fear. It is about setting crystal-clear rules, building mutual trust, and mastering animal behavior. I train because I value a relationship with your dog, not a dictatorship. But being relationship-focused does NOT mean I am a pushover.

If a dog blatantly breaks a known rule or crosses a safety line, I’m not afraid to use my hands to set a physical boundary or give a light smack on the rump to say "hey, that's enough." There is a massive difference between a fair physical correction for clarity and using heavy tools to terrify an animal.

Managing tough, independent dogs takes real strategy. While Sandor is my soft sweetheart, I learned this firsthand with my girl Arya, who was as strong-willed as they come, and Riot, my current "Miss Independent." They forced me to master my craft and throw out old-school fiction.

If you want a dog that listens because they respect you, not because they fear you, it's time to bust these three massive training myths:
1️⃣ Myth: "Using food is just bribery." 🧀🍗
The Reality: There is a huge difference between a bribe and a paycheck. Bribing is waving chicken to coax a dog to stop barking. Reinforcement is keeping the food hidden, asking for a behavior, and paying them after the job is done. Independent dogs need a reason to work! Once the behavior is solid, we fade the food out and use intermittent rewards—just like a slot machine.
2️⃣ Myth: "You have to be the 'Alpha' and dominate your dog." 🚫
The Reality: The "alpha wolf" theory was debunked decades ago by the very scientists who created it. Your dog isn't plotting a household takeover. When they push boundaries, they are just doing what works to get what they want. True leadership isn't about forcing submission; it's about controlling the resources (like food, attention, and door access) and setting fair rules.
3️⃣ Myth: "My dog acts out of pure spite." 🚩
The Reality: It feels personal when you come home to a shredded pillow, but dogs biologically do not possess the human cognitive skills required for revenge. They live in the moment. Destructive behavior or house accidents are driven by anxiety, boredom, or a lack of consistency—never spite. When we stop blaming "spite," we can actually solve the real problem.

Training independent, strong-willed dogs takes immense skill, split-second timing, and an approach that balances high-value rewards with clear boundaries. Let's ditch the outdated myths, drop the heavy tools, and start building real partnerships. 💪🐕
