🚨 If you suspect a case of New World Screwworm in Virginia, please call the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Office of Veterinary Services at (804) 786-2483!

New World screwworm (NWS) larvae were confirmed in the umbilicus of a 3-week-old calf in Zavala County, Texas, according to a June 3 announcement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

Join us in congratulating VVMA member, Dr. Cassidy Rist, on her exciting new role as director of the Center for Public Veterinary Medicine at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine!

This newly re-envisioned center is expanding opportunities to train veterinarians for careers in public health, industry, and beyond—including launching a graduate certificate program open to veterinary students nationwide.

Did you know nearly 25 percent of the nation's veterinarians work outside of private practice — in government agencies, research institutions, and international organizations? Most didn't know that path existed when they started vet school.

For over 30 years, VMCVM has been working to change that. This year, the center has a new name — the Center for Public Veterinary Medicine — and a new director, Dr. Cassidy Rist.
