Halloween week has a lot going on for dogs this year. 🎃

📅 Sunday, October 25 | Tricks-n-Treats Dog Festival
11:00 AM to 4:00 PM at The North Carolina Arboretum. A scavenger hunt, pet-focused vendors, and a virtual costume contest. Parking is $25 per vehicle for non-members; members park free.

📅 Monday, October 26 | Annual Dog-stume Contest
6:00 PM at Ecusta Brewing Company, 451 Ecusta Rd in Brevard. Free to watch and cheer. Winners are picked by popular vote, and a portion of taproom proceeds supports Almost Home Dog Rescue NC.

📅 Saturday, October 31 | Howl-O-Ween Pet Parade
3:00 PM in Black Mountain Town Square. Free to walk or watch, with a costume contest for cash prizes and local gift certificates. This one has been going for more than twenty years.

A quick word on costumes: some dogs love the attention, and plenty would rather go as themselves. A good costume lets your dog see, hear, breathe, open their mouth, and move freely, with nothing small enough to chew off. If yours keeps trying to wriggle out of it, a bandana counts. No judgment here.

Parade dog need a touch-up first? Nail trims are Halloween morning, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

If your dog loses it at one doorbell, Halloween night is a lot.

The good news: most of what helps happens before dark. Take a long walk earlier in the day. Set up a quiet room away from the front door before the first knock. Leave a TV or radio on. And keep a gate or a closed door between your dog and the front door every time it opens, because Halloween is one of the nights dogs slip out. Cats stay in, no exceptions.

Keep the candy bowl out of reach, too. Chocolate, sugar-free candy with xylitol, and raisins are all dangerous for dogs. If yours gets into something, call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. They're open 24/7; a consultation fee may apply.

Every dog and cat at Blue Ridge Humane Society can go home for free this month. 🐶🐱

Through October 31, adoption fees are waived for all dogs and cats. Hunter Subaru is covering dog adoptions through the Subaru Loves Pets program, and Blue Ridge Humane is waiving cat fees to make it easier for more animals to find homes.

No appointment needed. Adoptions are first come, first served, and you can usually bring your new pet home the same day. You can browse the dogs and cats waiting right now at blueridgehumane.org.

Oktoberfest season, dog edition. 🍺🐶

Three local events are welcoming dogs in the first ten days of October, and two of them raise money for animal shelters in our area.

📅 Saturday, October 3 | Pups & Pints
11:00 AM to 2:00 PM on the Pack Square Parking Garage rooftop, 26 Biltmore Ave in downtown Asheville. Free, and it benefits Asheville Humane Society

📅 Sunday, October 4 | Barktoberfest at Riverbend Park
10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at 100 Bleachery Blvd, Asheville. Free, hosted by Asheville Parks & Recreation, with canine contests, local pet vendors, and dog caricatures. Leashes required.

📅 Saturday, October 10 | BARKtoberfest at Booda-Fest
12:30 to 5:00 PM at Boodas Brewing, 120 E Barnwell St, right here in Hendersonville. Stein-holding contest at 3:00, best-dressed lederhosen at 4:00, and a fundraiser for Blue Ridge Humane Society.

Taking your dog? Keep b**r cups and spills out of reach, since alcohol is toxic to dogs. Skip sharing the brats and pretzels. Bring water and a bowl. And if your dog has had enough of the crowd, there's no shame in heading home early.

Need a new leash or harness first? They're 20% off all month. And if Riverbend sends your dog home muddy, the DIY Dog Wash is open daily until 3 PM.

You turn your back for fifteen seconds and your dog has its entire face in the cat's bowl. 🐶

Relax. For a healthy dog, a few stolen bites usually are not a reason to panic. Keep water available, keep an eye on them for a day, and that is typically the end of it.

The habit is the real problem. Cat food is formulated for cats, which means it is richer and more calorie-dense than most dog food. That is exactly why your dog is convinced the cat eats better than they do.

Call your vet if your dog has repeated vomiting, seems unusually lethargic, refuses food, or looks hunched and uncomfortable. Extra caution for dogs who are overweight, senior, on a prescription diet, or have a history of pancreatitis or kidney disease.

Leaf season is mud season. Your dog already knows this.

Our self-serve dog wash is $15 for dogs under 25 lbs and $20 for dogs 25 and over. That gets you a raised tub that saves your back, shampoo, conditioner, towels, dryers, and an apron. Most people are in and out in half an hour. We clean up afterward, which is a big reason people use it instead of their own bathroom.

It's the right call for trail mud, for maintenance between grooms, for dogs who settle better with their own person, and for dogs who stopped fitting in the tub at home about thirty pounds ago. 😆

It is not the right call for everything. Matting that needs clipping out, breed-specific cuts, de-shedding a double coat, anxious dogs who need experienced handling, skin conditions that need medicated care: those are groomer jobs.

If your dog has ever turned a relaxed brewery afternoon into a full-time job, this one is for you!

Mills River Brewing Co. is hosting a free Brewery Training Seminar this Saturday, September 19 at 12:00 PM, with trainer James Lyon of Ilio Canine Care. It runs about 45 minutes and covers safety techniques and practical tips for managing dogs in public brewery environments, with a Q&A at the end.

Around here, some of the best afternoons happen on a brewery patio. Knowing how to set your dog up to actually enjoy that, instead of white-knuckling the leash the whole time, is a genuinely useful skill.
