🐾 Meet Cassie!

Cassie is a little over a year old and ready to find her person! This sweet Pit Bull mix is a great traveler and good with kids!

Like all dogs (and humans), Cassie appreciates having her space respected. Especially when it comes to making new dog friends, she can be a little selective — she may not be everyone’s bestie, but the right match is out there! 🩷

Cassie has so much love and personality to give, and she’s hoping her forever family will give her the chance to show them just how special she is.

🐾Fosters, help your foster pet get seen! 🐾

One of the best ways to increase a foster animal’s chances of adoption is to get them out of the house and into the community where potential adopters can meet them, fall in love, and see their personality shine.

We have several upcoming events where we’d LOVE for our fosters to bring their foster dogs along! Whether they’re soaking up attention, making new friends, or simply showing everyone what a great companion they are, every outing gives them another chance to meet their future family.

🐶 Bring your foster pet
📸 Snap some photos and share their story
🐾 Introduce them to potential adopters
🏡 Help them get one step closer to their forever home!

Even if you can only attend for part of an event, every little bit of exposure helps!

Check out the dates on the graphic and come hang out with us. Each even's full details will be posted in our Events page. Let’s get these foster babies seen, loved, and ADOPTED!

🍊🐈 Happy belated National Orange Cat Day! 🐈🍊

We may be a day late, but we couldn’t let the occasion pass without giving a special shoutout to our orange cats currently available for adoption!

There’s just something about orange cats that makes you question your sanity… or maybe theirs. 😂 Between the zoomies, the shenanigans, and their questionable decision-making skills, life with an orange cat is rarely boring!

But regardless of how many brain cells they may or may not have, orange cats deserve loving homes, too. 🥰 They’ll keep you entertained and occupied.

If you’re looking for a little extra chaos, a whole lot of personality, and a furry companion who will keep you laughing, one of our orange kitties might be the perfect match for you! 🧡🐾

The Henderson Humane Society is heartbroken by the circumstances surrounding the death of the dog in the Braxton Park neighborhood and by the outcome of the subsequent investigation.

We know many members of our community are angry, frustrated and grieving after reading the recent news regarding this case. We share many of those emotions. No animal should suffer from neglect, abuse or cruelty, and cases like this are incredibly difficult for everyone who dedicates their time to protecting animals.

We also want to provide some clarity about the relationship between the Henderson Humane Society and Henderson County Animal Control.

The Humane Society holds the contract to provide Animal Control services for Henderson County, and we take the responsibility that comes with that contract seriously. However, Animal Control and the Humane Society’s shelter operations have separate staff, separate responsibilities and separate operating procedures. Animal Control Officers are responsible for enforcement of county animal-control ordinances and responding to calls in the community, while Humane Society staff primarily focus on the care, rehabilitation and placement of animals within our shelter and our community programs.

We are not sharing that distinction to avoid responsibility. As the organization entrusted with the Animal Control contract, we recognize our responsibility to evaluate what happened, identify where improvements are needed and support changes that better protect both animals and our community.

We believe this case exposed gaps that need to be addressed.

Animal cruelty investigations can become complex criminal matters requiring investigative training and legal authority beyond the traditional scope of Animal Control. We support the decision for Animal Control to work in conjunction with local law enforcement on future cases involving suspected cruelty, abuse or torture. We believe that partnership will provide stronger investigations and give future cases the best opportunity to result in accountability when criminal conduct can be proven.

We also believe Kentucky’s animal welfare laws can and should be stronger.

The Henderson Humane Society will continue advocating for laws, ordinances and community resources that better protect animals from neglect and cruelty. We will continue educating our community, supporting responsible pet ownership, assisting animals and families in need, and speaking up when we believe change is necessary.

None of those things change what happened to this dog.

We are heartbroken that his story ended this way. We wish there had been an opportunity to intervene sooner. We wish the circumstances surrounding his death had never occurred. And we understand why members of our community want answers and accountability.

What we can do now is learn from this case and use it to improve how we respond in the future.

Our community also plays an important role in protecting animals. If you see or suspect neglect, cruelty or abuse, please report it. You do not need to determine whether a situation legally constitutes neglect or cruelty before calling — that is what Animal Control and law enforcement are there to evaluate. And if you have reported a concern in the past but the situation continues or worsens, please report it again.

To contact Henderson County Animal Control:

🐾 Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Call 270-826-8966 and select option 2

🐾 After hours and on weekends
Call Henderson Dispatch at 270-827-8700

If an animal is in immediate danger or you are witnessing an emergency, please contact law enforcement immediately.

We remain committed to working with Henderson County, local law enforcement, our Animal Control Officers and our community to strengthen protections for animals throughout Henderson County.

We cannot change what happened to this dog.

But we can honor him by continuing to work toward a community where fewer animals ever find themselves in his circumstances.

And that work will continue.
