Don’t forget! $13 adoption fees through the end of October! A spooky good price for a lifetime of love. 💕

Adult dogs, young dogs, senior dogs, we’ve got them! We have lots of dogs that are great with other dogs, cats, and kids.

Not ready to adopt? Fostering is an option too! This increases their chances at adoption and opens up a kennel for a stray!

If there is one dog that we are surprised about still being in the shelter, it’s Texas! Texas has been with us since the end of MARCH! Way too long for a sweet boy like him.

Now he may be extra large, but so is his heart.❤️ He’s got an amazing personality and is pretty calm! And he loves to dress up and chase his own shadows!

📣 FOSTERS NEEDED 📣

When we say fosters are life savers, we mean it! Fostering a dog is one of the most rewarding things you can do for a shelter.

It changes the dogs entire life. Going from a shelter where they have very little human interaction a day to joining your family in their daily routine can save their lives.

When people visit our shelter and walk through our kennels, they are not seeing a dogs true personality. That dog is in a new and very stressful environment.

Showing their future adopters how they actually behave in a home is a good way to guarantee that they will stay in their next home.

If you’re interested in learning more about fostering, fill out an application and we will match you with the best fit. This is a completely free and extremely helpful way to volunteer your time to the shelter and our dogs!

Meet Sammy! He’s a sweet, fun-loving young guy who sometimes forgets he isn’t tiny anymore! He’s still very much a puppy and may get overly excited, but he’s a cool guy with lots of love to give. Sammy loves treats, enjoys playing with other dogs, and can sit for a treat. He did well with children ages 6 and 10. He walks pretty well on leash, though a little more practice would help him shine!

Cuddles is a sweet girl who’s great with people and seems to do well with kids. She knows how to sit, walks nicely on leash, and rides wonderfully in the car. She may need a little help getting into the car, but once she’s in, she settles in like a pro! 🚗

Cuddles is selective with other dogs, so any dogs in her future home will need slow, proper introductions. We’re not sure how she does with cats.

Meet McDouble Extra Pickles! This big, chill guy is a senior sweetheart looking for a soft place to spend his golden years. He uses his litter box, enjoys the open cat room, and seems comfortable around other cats. He was also fine with dogs coming in and out of the room and enjoyed meeting a 10-year-old child.

We believe McDouble Extra Pickles could make a wonderful companion. Seniors deserve a loving home where they can enjoy their golden years, and we’d love to help this handsome guy find his. 💙

Meet Dude! 🐾 This handsome, extra-chunky tabby has big eyes and plenty of personality. He uses his litter box, enjoys being indoors, and seems to do well with other cats.

Dude likes affection on his own terms and appreciates having his space respected, so he may do best in a home without very young children. He doesn’t seem to enjoy dogs getting into his space, but he doesn’t seek them out or try to cause trouble. A calm introduction and room to keep his distance would be important in a home with dogs.

Dude is in the open cat room, so stop by to meet him—and say hello to many of his friends, too! He’s also microchipped and vaccinated. 🥹🐱

💔Every kennel is full.

We have some amazing dogs in our shelter. Yet we are averaging 15 dog adoptions a month. 15 dogs leaving the shelter in 30 days, 23 dogs entering a shelter in 14 days.

Those numbers are not sustainable.

So what is it that we are seeing?

- Most of our dogs are adults. We don’t get too many puppies coming in. (Knock on wood)
- Most of our dogs coming in are strays that do not get reclaimed. Likely dumped.
- The dogs coming in are not fixed or microchipped.

Here is what we are asking of you.

PLEASE know that adopting a puppy is a huge responsibility. Whether it’s from a shelter or not, puppies are an 8-15 year commitment. They require training, vet visits, and lots of time. One day they will be an adult dog. The training does not stop even then.

PLEASE spay and neuter your pets. Butler County offers a low cost spay and neuter clinic. We are begging our community to utilize this. This helps prevent backyard breeding and a continuous cycle of puppies being abandoned when they are adults.

PLEASE utilize our Pete’s Pet Food Pantry. We know times are tough. We understand that providing for a family right now is hard enough. We hope that if we can offer food assistance for your pets that they will be able to stay with their family. If there is anything we can do to help keep pets in their homes and out of the shelter, we will try our best.

Rural King is now offering vaccine and microchip clinics monthly. We hope our community will take advantage of this. Microchipping your dog is the number one fastest way that you will be reunited with your dog should they ever get out.

We can ask our community to adopt all day long. The reality is, there are not 75 homes waiting at our doors for these 75 dogs. We have to start at home. Being a responsible pet owner is what is going to help the Henderson Humane Society the most. Our hearts break seeing these dogs sitting and waiting for months, even years to get adopted knowing that at one point in time, they were likely a very loved family member.

**The sleeping dog is Kyra! She is deaf and can sleep right through the sound of her neighbors barking all day! Lucky her!😅
