If youโve ever heard your trainer say โmore connectionโ or โbetter contactโ and felt a little confused, youโre not alone... ๐ค
Contact and connection are two of the most important terms in Dressageโand while they sound similar, they mean very different things. Understanding the difference (and how to develop both in your riding) is key to building a better partnership with your horse. ๐๐
In this post, Iโll walk you through what contact and connection really mean, how to develop them step by step, and why theyโre essential for softness, balance, and harmony. ๐

Contact refers to the relationship between your hand and your horseโs mouthโspecifically, from your fingers to the bit. Ideally, you should have the weight of a soda can in your hands. It should be soft, elastic, and even on both reins. โ
No contact means your reins are slack, and it becomes difficult to communicate with or guide your horse. Too much contact, on the other hand, feels like lifting weightsโnot ideal, either. ๐ชโ
Contact gives you a line of communication, but itโs only the beginning. ๐ฏ
To establish steady contact ๐:
Start with correct rider position. Check your alignment (earโshoulderโhipโheel), make sure you have a straight line from your elbow to the bit, and let your elbows follow your horseโs natural neck movement. ๐โ
Ride forward. Think of pushing a shopping cart: your legs provide the energy, your hands stay steady. Push your horse forward into the contact so they seek the bit. ๐โก๏ธ Use groundwork if neededโฆ๐๐๐๐๐๐! ๐ฐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐! ๐
