I am focused on the needs of the client and their dog. There is no "one size fits all" method in canine training, but there many common and accepted methods which can be used. I believe by adapting to the dog in front of me, the best results will be reached.

Negative Punishment is a very powerful tool, especially when you “free shape” the behavior or allow the dog to “self discover” the behavior you want. When I use the technique I describe, I add the “stay” command after the dog learns to stay on its own. KEEP IT SIMPLE!

LA County Police K-9 Assn/Demo is always a great time. I have the opportunity to work with 30-40 K9 teams over a 4 day period. My goal in working with each team is that they leave with at least one thing they can implement or work on. Some teams are more difficult just because they are already squared away! With this team I was just trying to get his recall to a heel a little cleaner. So, let the dog settle after the bite (forward down him) then bring him to the handler’s side without forcing the dog further away from the decoy.

Humbled to stand in front of the handlers at the 25th annual LA County Police K-9 Assn/Demo conference and share some information. Instinctive (desire) is what sets a great K9 apart from a good K9. You can’t teach heart!

Train smarter not harder. To progress in a recent off leash training course, I needed this dog to understand his recall command (Platz). At this point it was not yet a classically conditioned behavior. So, we spent some time working the recall using food. The handler was assigned this exercise as homework and by the end of class we were good.

You cannot correct the dog for “disobedience” to a command if he/she doesn’t know what to do.
