👻 The CUTEST Halloween photos start with happy dogs! 🎃

Want to dress up your pup for a spooky photoshoot? Here are a few tips to keep it fun, safe, and stress-free!

🐾 Let your dog opt in. Introduce costumes, props, and decorations gradually. If your dog moves away, freezes, ducks their head, or seems uncomfortable, listen to them! A costume isn't worth the stress.

🎃 Keep it comfortable. Choose lightweight outfits that allow normal movement, breathing, seeing, hearing, and panting. Avoid anything restrictive, hot, or likely to snag.

📸 Keep sessions short. Have treats ready, take a few quick photos, and give your dog breaks. You don't need a perfectly posed picture to capture the Halloween spirit!

🦴 Make it rewarding. Pair the experience with treats, praise, play, or whatever your dog enjoys. Let them participate at their own pace, without forcing them to stay in place.

👀 Watch the whole dog. Lip licking, turning away, pinned ears, a tucked tail, or suddenly becoming still can be signs of discomfort. Look at the full picture, including your dog's body language and the context.

👻 Get creative without the costume! Bandanas, themed backgrounds, fun props placed nearby, or a little photo editing can make adorable pictures without dressing your dog up at all.

🐾 Dog training is a little like Chutes and Ladders!

Some days, your dog climbs the ladder and makes amazing progress. Other days, you hit a chute and feel like you’re right back where you started.

But going backward doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Progress isn’t always linear, and setbacks are a normal part of learning.

Celebrate the little wins, meet your dog where they are, and remember that every step is part of the journey. ❤️

Keep climbing, one paw at a time! 🐾

What chutes and ladders have you encountered with your dog’s training?

We are surrounded by stress every day 🤪 and naturally so are our dogs. Unfortunately, a stressful event doesn't necessarily end when the event itself is over.

A dog who has just experienced a veterinary visit, a grooming appointment, an encounter with a scary dog, a busy public outing, or another stressful situation may need time and space to recover.

Stress can temporarily affect a dog's ability to regulate their emotions, respond to cues, tolerate frustration, and cope with additional challenges. This is why decompression is a huge discussion for our behavior clients!

So, what does decompression look like?

🐾 Giving your dog time in a quiet, familiar environment.

🐾 Allowing them to sniff, explore, or engage in other activities they find rewarding.

🐾 Providing opportunities for uninterrupted rest and sleep.

🐾 Temporarily reducing demands, training expectations, and exposure to additional stressors.

‼️Here's the important part - Decompression isn't a magic reset button, and there's no universal 24-, 48-, or 72-hour rule that applies to every dog. Recovery depends on the individual dog, the intensity and duration of the stressor, their previous experiences, and their current environment.

Decompression also doesn't mean avoiding all challenges indefinitely. It means giving your dog an opportunity to recover so you can thoughtfully support their ability to cope with future challenges.

Sometimes, the most helpful thing you can do for your dog after a hard day is ask less of them.

What helps your dog decompress?

Boundaries are crucial with kids and dogs, and this simple approach can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents and injuries👍🏻

What do boundaries look like?

🐾 Baby gates
🐾 X-pens
🐾 Crate time (for the dog, of course 😅)
🐾 Rotating inside and outside
🐾 Closed doors

These aren’t fancy suggestions, but these boundaries provide safe places for both dogs and kids.

While these things are important, remember that training is still needed! If a boundary fails, training provides reliable responses. Similarly, children must be taught safety around dogs as soon as they are old enough to understand 🧠
