The LCHS is a private, community-based, not-for-profit organization that provides shelter for unwanted and stray animals (primarily dogs and cats) while working to end pet overpopulation, reduce the need for euthanasia, and improve the humane treatment and well-being of companion animals. It serves a population of roughly 70,000 residents in southwestern Montana and a service area covering roughly

5,500 square miles. Since its creation in 1964, LCHS has continued to grow and expand its facilities and programs along with the growth of the community. In an effort to decrease the amount of animals that come through the shelter, we work tirelessly to make sure the pets in our community are vaccinated and spayed and neutered while in our care. LCHS also has a comprehensive foster care program - including day-trips and sleepovers - in order to help meet the needs of all the animals in our care while they wait for their forever homes. We also have multiple specialized personnel who work to socialize, exercise, and train animals in our care, in order to provide the best quality of life for the animals. **BARNEY IS ADOPTED!**
Meet Barney!

Barney is a lovely boy with a big heart who truly shines once he gets to know you. This playful, fun-loving guy is looking for a special person who will be his steady comfort as he learns that the world can be a safe and predictable place. Because he can be a bit timid at first, his people will need to earn his trust a bit, but our staff are happy to talk you through that!

Barney loves being with his people and would happily be your shadow, whether you’re out exploring or relaxing at home. He enjoys adventures like walks and hikes, and he has a hilarious approach to fetch — he is all about the “throw” part of the game, but the “bring it back” part is still under review. His motto might be: no take, only throw!

This social guy also enjoys spending time with other dogs and would love having a canine buddy to play with. When it comes to younger kiddos, Barney can be a little unsure of their quick movements and unpredictability, so he would likely do best in a home where he can have calm, respectful interactions.

Barney would love a home where he can stay active, explore, and then settle in for some quality cuddle time with his favorite human. He is still working on feeling confident around unfamiliar people and new things he encounters on adventures, so a calm, patient family who can provide consistency and guidance will help Barney continue to grow.

Barney is also continuing to work on his potty training and is making wonderful progress with a little support and routine.

The world can feel a bit big and unpredictable, and Barney is looking for the person who can be his calm harbor — someone who will help him navigate new experiences while celebrating the playful, loyal, loving dog he already is.

Kitten season is here in full force, and more kittens are arriving every day. We need safe, temporary homes to help us keep up and continue saying “yes” to kittens in need.

We provide everything: food, supplies, and medical care. You provide the love and a safe space.

Meet Willow!

Looking for a thumb-wrestling partner—or perhaps a sentient pair of jeans lying on your floor? Meet Willow!

This polydactyl queen has two extra toes on each front paw, giving her some serious stompers. Willow is an independent companion who enjoys being near her people without becoming their shadow. She gets along with other cats but appreciates her personal space—and she prefers attention on her own terms.

You’ll often find her surveying her kingdom from a high perch, lounging on the laundry, or joining you in bed at night. If you’re looking for a laid-back little diva who will keep you company while tending to her kingdom, Willow may be your queen!

Meet Sammy and Joey, two Chihuahua brothers by choice, not by birth. Though they didn’t come from the same litter, these little gentlemen have formed a bond that runs deep, and they are looking for a home where they can continue their lives side by side.

These handsome boys came from a quiet home where they were deeply loved, and due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control, they are now searching for that same peaceful lifestyle once again. Sammy and Joey are the kind of dogs who know exactly what they like—and, as any self-respecting Chihuahua will tell you, all important decisions are subject to their approval. They can be a bit selective about their people, but once you’ve earned a place in their royal court, you’ll be rewarded with loyalty, companionship, and plenty of personality.

The brothers enjoy spending time outdoors under the watchful care of their trusted humans, taking in the sights and sounds of the world at their own pace. They’re also quite content to spend their days relaxing at home, enjoying the comforts and attention that two little princes such as themselves have come to expect.

Sammy and Joey are currently living in a foster home while they wait for their happily ever after. Sam is starting to lose hope.

He is one of the last cats still waiting after we helped with a major overcrowding situation in Billings. While the other cats found their families, quiet Sam has continued to be overlooked.

Sam is such a good boy. He loves being held, does wonderfully with other cats, and is happiest simply relaxing near the people he trusts. But because he tends to quietly lie in his kennel instead of demanding attention, visitors often pass him by.

Sam would do best in a home without young children, where life is a little calmer and he can finally feel safe, loved, and noticed.
