Air Quality Alert: Purple Level

Today’s air quality is at a Purple level, meaning the air is unhealthy for everyone including our furry family members.

Here are a few simple ways to help keep your pets safe:

👉🏻 Keep outdoor time as short as possible.

👉🏻 Keep windows closed and, if possible, use an air purifier.

👉🏻 Make sure your pets have plenty of fresh water.

👉🏻 Watch for signs of breathing difficulty, coughing, wheezing, excessive panting, or unusual tiredness.

Senior pets, puppies, kittens, and pets with heart or respiratory conditions are especially at risk.

A heat advisory means the combination of high temperatures and humidity creates a life-threatening environment for dogs. Because dogs cannot sweat effectively and cool primarily by panting, extreme heat limits their ability to regulate their body temperature, putting them at severe risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Protect your dog during this time by following these essential steps

Limit Outdoor Time: Keep walks short and restrict them to the early morning or late evening when the sun is down.

Avoid Hot Surfaces: Asphalt and concrete absorb heat and can quickly burn a dog’s paw pads. Furthermore, because dogs are short, they are closer to these radiating surfaces.

Provide Constant Hydration and Shade: Ensure your dog has constant access to fresh water and a cool, shaded area if they must go outside.

Never Leave in a Parked Car: Interior car temperatures can reach lethal levels in minutes, even with cracked windows.

Signs of Overheating

Monitor your dog for early warning signs of heatstroke, which is a medical emergency.

Look for:

Heavy or excessive panting
Excessive drooling
Bright red, pale, or sticky gums
Weakness, dizziness, or collapsing
Vomiting or diarrhea

If you suspect your dog is overheating, move them to an air-conditioned area, offer cool (not ice-cold) water, and wet them with lukewarm water.
