Myth #1: "All dogs are, by definition, pets."

In Paved With Good Intentions, Kim Brophey pushes back on this one hard. Most dogs in the canine gene pool weren't actually selected for companionship at all. They were bred for specific jobs - hunting, herding, guarding, ratting, retrieving - work that shaped their behavior, temperament, and physical traits long before "pet" was their primary designation.

When we flatten every dog into a single "pet" category, we lose sight of that history (and all of their welfare-relevant behavioral ecology) entirely, so it becomes easy to overlook the real biological needs a dog still carries even though their original job no longer exists in modern life. A herding breed still has the motivation to herd. A scent hound still needs to track. Those instincts don't disappear just because we've renamed the role.

Loving a dog as a family member doesn't erase what they are underneath that role, it just makes it harder to see. The more we lean on "pet" as the whole story, the more we risk missing the actual animal standing in front of us, and the welfare needs that come with being that specific kind of animal rather than a generic companion.
