Goose is a 125-pound "Dober-Dane" who suffered years of abuse from a cruel man who beat the humans and the dogs in the home. He was saved literally at the last minute but only after Goose saw and heard his siblings being shot by this man. (He is in prison now). Goose went to a shelter and then to a highly experienced foster mom, Kim Heaton. Goose - like many highly traumatized dogs - seemed to be in a shut down state while she was fostering him. She grew to love him and decided to adopt him. And then on the day she signed the adoption papers, Goose started showing the true cost of his brutal first years.
He showed signs of severe separation anxiety that left walls bloodied by his attempts to escape.
He barked and startled at every noise.
He most certainly did not trust men and he barked a huge bark and began lunging first at men, then at everyone and then at dogs, even though the shelter saw him playing nicely with other dogs.
Goose is a large, strong dog and he could do some serious damage to a person or a dog. Kim briefly considered returning him to the shelter but she knew what his fate would be. Who could take in a large, seemingly people- and dog-aggressive dog?
Then Kim made a decision that changed the outcome for Goose's life and for her own. She decided to keep him and she would learn everything she could to help him adjust to his new life. She reached out to PAC Founder Annie Phenix, a certified behavior expert, and dove into learning all about helping reactive, stressed dogs from Annie and other canine professionals. When Annie first met Goose six months ago, she needed to put into use all of her safety features as Goose met her with loud, forceful barks and aggressive-looking behaviors. Goose was kept on a leash and behind safety barriers. He could see and smell Annie but he could not reach her. He barked for the first 15 minutes.
Six months later, Kim brought Goose back to meet Annie. He looked like an entirely different dog. He was calm and greeted Annie politely and took treats from her - no signs of the former Goose - no barking, no lunging, no stress. He happily walked down to the training room and began an off-leash Free Work (UK Trainer Sarah Fisher's ACE program) session with Annie not behind any barriers. He even came over to sniff and be petted by Annie and she felt safe because he was now safe. Annie was in awe at how soft his coat and his beautiful eyes are.
How did Kim get these results for her dog in just six months? Come and hear directly from Kim herself on the PAC's October Let's Get Real discussion. Details and sign up link below.
