There are some bold squirrels in Tucker’s condo complex, they can be a challenge considering his natural prey drive. We practice “hunting together” he can watch as long as he needs without yanking me to the animal. It usually ends when the squirrel or bunny moves away, or Tucker is satiated and moves along.

What natural doggy outlets do you give your dogs?

Been living mostly in the “real world” lately, but these are some of the lovelies I have had the pleasure of working with recently…

💟Daphne- can get a little worried on walks and hikes, we are working on skills and confidence to help her get moving when she’s stuck and reassure her that her people will listen and support when things get hard.
🐾Hazel- panics a bit when things are unpredictable and loud, and she lives in quite the busy household! We are working on managing her space so she’s has an out when things are challenging and making sure all of her physical and mental needs are met, so she is less on edge when the unexpected happens.
💟Iago-finds the little human in the house scary and unpredictable at times, we are building his confidence around the toddler and providing skills for relaxing, doing muzzle training, and working on getting his needs more fully met.
🐾Hazel (yes there are 2!)-a puppy working on puppy skills including, house training, socializing, and using teeth appropriately! A positive jumpstart before puppy classes start.
💟Maple-her family is adjusting to a multi-dog household with this beautiful (slightly) under-socialized, high-energy adolescent from rough circumstances, she’s already come so far! Here she is featured with “Karl” an appropriate toy to put her teeth on and an overall energy outlet.
🐾Tucker-though not in training right now, we are taking regular walks while Mom is adjusting to life with a newborn and Dad is back at work.

"Don't tell me he just needs more sleep."

Rest doesn't seem to help.
Walks don't seem to help.
Enrichment doesn't seem to help.

I hear you. I really do.
And I hear how exhausting that can be.

Here's something worth considering.

Not everything that calms one dog's nervous system will help another's.

That lick mat? It may reduce arousal in one dog and increase it in another.
That trip to the dog park?
Some dogs recover quickly. Others may carry those effects for days.

That constant access to another dog? Some thrive on it. Others never get enough time to regulate between interactions.
They will crave it more.

Dysregulation isn't usually solved by finding one magic activity.
I wish it was that easy.

It’s nuanced.
It’s individual.
It needs tweaked. Often.

What was the biggest “aha” you had when you realised something that was supposed to help actually made things worse? behaviour

Some clients stick with you long term, some are shorter stints. I think about many past clients and their dogs often, where are they now? How have things been going? I hope their families are happy. At times curiosity gets the best of me and I reach out, I am so glad I did with these 3!

Junie the adolescent rescue brought home by the college age daughter was a challenge to integrate with the existing senior pair Baxter and Rosie, but look at them now! Regular hangs, walks, and car rides. Great work and congratulations!

Meet Nellie 💕

Nellie is a smart, young, athletic Bluetick Coonhound / Cattle Dog, also known as Heeler, mix looking for her right forever home.

🐾 The Basics:
She is safe, loved, and not at risk of going to a shelter or rescue. We are simply helping find her perfect match. It is through absolutely no one’s fault that Nellie is looking for new adventures. Her people love her deeply and want the best possible future for her.

⚠️Any negative comments will be removed. Please scroll on if you have nothing helpful to add.

🌟 What She Loves:
📖Training and learning new things. She is very food motivated.
⛰️Off-leash hiking and outdoor adventures.
👥️Spending quality time with her people.
🐈She has successfully lived with cats before and may do well with them again with proper introductions.

🐶 The Ideal Match:
Nellie would be a fantastic fit for someone who wants an athletic, eager, biddable dog with a little “heeler edge.” She is not a couch potato kind of girl. She does best with structure, attention, focused daily activity, and positive reinforcement training.

❤️ A Note From One of Her Trainers:
“I have known Nellie for most of her life, right from her puppyhood. She is honestly among my absolute favorite dogs. Smart as a whip and incredibly athletic, she has the drive and focus to succeed in many different dog sports. If we were set up for a second dog of our own right now, we would have kept her in a heartbeat. She is incredibly special.”

🏡 Adoption Requirements and Support:
Because we are fully invested in her future, we will be asking for and checking vet references for all applicants. We also require periodic check-ins after adoption to support her new family and ensure Nellie’s long-term success.

To help with a smooth transition, we will cover the cost of a grpup class with Unmistaken Stars Farm Sanctuary, where Nellie has already taken classes.
