Did you know that those tiny silica gel packets, often found in packages, can pose hidden dangers to our furry friends?

With the flurry of new presents from the recent holidays, keep an eye out for those sneaky silica gel packets lurking in shoe boxes and other goods. While these packets typically cause only mild stomach upset, the concern heightens when found in medication bottles or encountered by small pets.

Size matters! Ensure your pet's safety by promptly disposing of any silica gel packets—big or small. Let's keep our four-legged family members safe and sound!

Every royal court needs a few distinguished nobles, tiny tyrants, eccentric aristocats, and lovable rogues. For a donation to Southern Pines, your pet can join the Royal Pet Gallery at Fur Ball 2026 with their very own Renaissance-style portrait!

A suggested donation of $75 gets you a custom pet portrait created by our staff in Photoshop. After Fur Ball, you’ll receive both the printed portrait displayed at the event and a digital copy to keep!

Get a Renaissance portrait of your pet: https://loom.ly/AEYqUVo

Thank you! Your donation helps provide care and second chances for pets in need. Entries close Sept. 7th.

Do you have to attend Fur Ball to join the Royal Portrait Gallery? Nope! While we hope you do consider joining us, you do not have to attend Fur Ball to join in the fun!

In honor of National Ginger Cat Day, here's some orange cat facts you might not know!

🧡 The orange color in cats is due to a genetic trait carried on the X chromosome. Both male and female cats can be orange, but typically males are more likely to display this color due to their XY chromosome configuration.
🧡 Orange cats are never a solid color! They always have some kind of coat pattern, like stripes or spots.
🧡 Kitty freckles (called lentigo) is most common in orange, calico, and tortoiseshell cats. Dark brown or black spots may appear on their lips, nose, ears, and even eyelids.

Do you have a ginger cutie, like staff pet Pumpkin? Share a photo of your kitty cat in the comments!

A common question we get asked is, “Does my cat have to be in a carrier?”

We do require all cats to be in a carrier before we bring them inside the building. Having your cat in a carrier (like our furriend Oreo modeling below!) benefits everyone involved. Be sure to use a carrier specifically designed to transport your pet. Unfortunately, things like cardboard boxes, laundry baskets, large dog crates, and plastic storage containers are not effective carriers and could potentially pose a danger to you, our staff, and your pet.

Carriers are important for several reasons:
- Your cat is safe. When your cat is brought inside the building, there are other patients coming and going. Curious dogs may try to sniff and scare your feline friend!
- You are safe. Scared cats will do anything to get away and that includes scratching or biting even their favorite human.
- Our staff is safe. The vet clinic can be a scary place (especially if they’re poked with a needle!).
- Driving to your appointment is safer. Opening a car door or window is the perfect time for an escape artist to go on an adventure. Also, a cat loose in the car can be quite a distraction!

Don’t own a carrier? No worries! We sell cardboard carriers for $15. You can purchase one before your visit or when you arrive with your cat for their appointment. Check out our FAQs page for other common questions you may have at www.sopineshealthypets.org/surgeryfaqs

Back-to-school blues? Your pets might feel it, too.

When the house suddenly goes quiet after a summer full of cuddles, snacks, and chaos, some pets feel the shift just as much as we do.

If your kitty or pup seems a little down when the new school year starts, here are a few ways to help ease the transition:
✨ Start the day with a little play: a quick walk or a game of fetch in the yard can help burn off nervous energy and set a calmer tone for the day. For cats, their favorite toy or some extra cuddles in the morning can go a long way.
🧠 Before heading out, offer them a special treat-stuffed toy or puzzle feeder: this gives them something to look forward to after everyone walks out the door, turning goodbye into a mini celebration.
🐾 Most of all, just give them some grace. They're adjusting, too.

Let’s help our pets feel secure, even when routines change. You’ve got this, and so do they. 📓
