This is not an easy message to share, we have decided to let Flower go to the Rainbow bridge tomorrow afternoon.
I am sure it comes to a surprise to some as per photos it looks like she is doing well, and she is ok, but she is not great.
Her eye sight is nearly all gone, she trips more frequently, sometimes she even loses her big red ball when its just 3 feet away. If it is not moving she can't see it at all, she mostly finds it by smell. Days when its too dark out (rainy), she wont come out at all to play, the more her vision has disappeared, the more introverted she has become. This also leads her to give me more warnings, she snaps/growls.
Yesterday evening the wind caught a bush so it moved, she noticed it, thought it was a human and went to attack.
She also do not wish for as many cuddles as she used to, the weather has to be perfect for it.
As you all know fall and winter is here, this means she will sit almost 6 months in her kennel and not wish to come out. I also do not know how dangerous she will be for me once her eye sight is all gone. Her sister did attack one of her shelter volunteers she was friends with badly, she has also been euthanized. Her brother is still in the same shelter she came from, from what I understand he is hard to handle as well.
We dont find this fair to Flower to keep her alive when her quality of life is mediocre and will go to low, she is not happy that way and that is not how any of her people wish to remember her. This last month her friends have been here, she has been eating a lot of stuff, some healthy a lot less healthy, but she has enjoyed it.
This dog who used to have pretty bad possession aggression has gotten so much good stuff that she now leave things half eaten and has become picky of what her favorites are. It truly has felt good to be able to give a dog who has ever had so little, enough that she feels safe in that she will get more and she will get what she wants.
Thank you all for supporting Flower these last 18 months, she has enjoyed every treat from you guys. She really has tried to be the best she can be. She is an amazing little dog and will take a chunk of our hearts with her when she goes.
