It's colic season and you know what that means? Arms up butts! Well for me at least. But for you guys it means keep a close eye on those water troughs to ensure your horse is drinking enough. Mashes and electrolytes are also a great way to increase your horse's water intake.

Keep those ponies drinking and remember, the earlier you call for a colic the easier it can be to treat some of them.

Teeth time answer!

Thank you to everyone who put their dental tracking skills to the test on our last post! The correct answer is 3 years old.

Aging a young horse is remarkably accurate because we can follow a highly predictable timeline of dental development. Here is the breakdown of how we know this horse is right at the 3-year mark based on their incisors:

At around 2.5 years of age, a horse sheds its central deciduous, or "baby," incisors. By age 3, those new permanent central incisors are fully erupted and coming into wear.

If you look closely at a 3-year-old mouth, you will see a clear contrast. The large, rectangular permanent central incisors stand out cleanly right next to the smaller, more rounded intermediate and corner baby teeth. These remaining baby teeth won't be replaced by permanent ones until ages 4 and 5.

As equine veterinarians we get asked A LOT to age horses. And how do we do that? By teeth!

Although it's not a perfect science teeth can help us age horses especially younger horses. We look at the angle of the teeth, baby versus adult teeth, and certain markers in the occlusal (biting) surface of the incisors.

Sometimes as vets we still need assistance with difficult cases. And when we can't figure out the problem we ask for help.
