Did you know that an insect sting can cause a life-threatening allergic reaction in your pet? While many stings cause only localized pain or swelling, some can trigger anaphylaxis, a sudden, severe allergic reaction that requires immediate veterinary attention.
Signs of anaphylaxis may include vomiting, diarrhea, facial swelling, difficulty breathing, weakness or collapse. These symptoms often develop quickly, but reactions can sometimes be delayed for hours. Even if your pet seems fine immediately after being stung, it's important to watch for changes.
There's another outdoor hazard to keep in mind. Some wasps, including yellowjackets, build nests underground where curious pets can accidentally disturb them while sniffing or exploring the yard. Multiple stings can cause serious complications, even in pets that don't experience an allergic reaction.
If your pet develops any of these symptoms or experiences multiple stings, seek emergency veterinary care immediately. Recognizing the warning signs and getting prompt treatment can make a critical difference.
