As Vet Tech Week comes to a close, we’re reminded that it takes amazing veterinarians and an amazing team to make it all happen!

We’re grateful for Dr. Burks and Dr. Wood and all they do for our patients and staff!

And since Dr. Gill is our practice owner, every day is a Dr. Gill day around here, so we thought we’d dress the part! 😄 We’re lucky to work with such a wonderful team!

🎃🍫 HALLOWEEN CANDY: A SWEET TREAT FOR YOU, BUT A DANGER TO YOUR PETS! 🐾

Halloween is almost here, and while the candy is a treat for kids and adults, some of those sweet treats can be dangerous—or even deadly—for our four-legged family members!

🐶🐱 Morgan Animal Hospital wants to remind pet owners to keep Halloween candy safely out of reach!

🚫 CHOCOLATE: Contains theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to dogs and cats. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are especially dangerous.

🚫 XYLITOL: This sugar substitute, sometimes listed as "birch sugar," is found in certain sugar-free candies and gums. Even small amounts can cause life-threatening low blood sugar and liver damage in dogs.

🚫 RAISINS: Found in some Halloween treats, raisins and grapes can cause sudden kidney failure in dogs.

🚫 CANDY WRAPPERS: Foil and plastic wrappers can cause choking or dangerous intestinal blockages if swallowed.

🚫 HIGH-FAT AND SUGARY TREATS: Even candy without toxic ingredients can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or pancreatitis.

⚠️ WHAT IF YOUR PET EATS HALLOWEEN CANDY?

Don't wait for symptoms! Contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary hospital immediately. Keep the candy packaging so the veterinary team can identify the ingredients. Do not induce vomiting unless instructed by a veterinary professional.

🎃 HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIP:Keep candy bowls, trick-or-treat bags, and leftover treats in secure locations where curious paws and noses can't reach them!

🐾 October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month! ❤️

There are so many wonderful dogs in shelters waiting for a second chance and a family to call their own. If you’re thinking about adding a dog to your home, adoption can be an incredibly rewarding way to do it.

A successful adoption starts with finding the right fit for your family, lifestyle, and other pets. Take time to learn about the dog’s personality, energy level, history, and needs—and remember that adjusting to a new home can take patience.

Once you bring your new dog home, one of the best first steps is scheduling a veterinary exam. A checkup can help establish a health baseline, review vaccination and parasite-prevention needs, discuss nutrition, and identify any concerns that may need attention.

🍂🐾 Fall is beautiful—but your yard can hide a few hazards for curious pets.

Mushrooms, acorns, moldy leaves, nuts, and other seasonal debris can cause stomach upset or more serious problems if eaten.

A few quick fall safety tips:

🍄 Remove wild mushrooms from areas your pet uses 🌰 Keep pets from chewing or swallowing acorns and nuts 🍁 Clean up piles of damp or moldy leaves 🪵 Watch for sharp sticks, pinecones, and other yard debris 👀 Keep an eye on pets who like to sniff, dig, and taste everything

🐾 Today is National Pet Obesity Awareness Day

A few extra pounds may not seem like a big deal, but for our pets, excess weight can put added stress on the joints, heart, and overall health.

Keeping your pet at a healthy weight starts with a few simple habits:

🥣 Feed appropriate portions instead of “eyeballing” meals
🦴 Keep treats in moderation
🐕 Make daily exercise part of the routine
⚖️ Watch for gradual weight gain or changes in body shape
