🐾 Our oldest Bernese Mountain Dog, Winston, went in for his annual physical and shots today.

The vet says he’s doing wonderfully. In a couple of months he’ll turn 10, and I’m grateful for every healthy day we have with our big old boy.

For anyone new to our page, Winston came into our lives after our puppy Rocky died at just six months old, nearly 10 years ago.

Losing Rocky devastated us. We couldn’t imagine bringing another puppy into the house when we were still missing him so badly.

But within days, a family contacted us about Winston. He was a little Bernese Mountain Dog puppy who needed a new home because a child in his family was severely allergic to him.

They didn’t ask for their money back. They wanted him to live with people who would love him.

We agreed to meet him, though we thought it was too soon.

Courtney held him while he was still small enough to fit comfortably in her arms. Winston rested his head against her, and she smiled through tears for the first time in days. ❤️

He never replaced Rocky. We still wish we’d had more time with our first puppy.

But Winston gave us comfort when we needed it most.

As he grew, he became the gentle center of our household. Every dog who joined our family afterward learned something from him: how to be patient, how to welcome someone new, and where to settle when everyone is together.

Now he’s almost 10. His walks may be slower, but he is still Winston—the dog who helped our family find its footing again.

I hope today’s good news means we get to enjoy many more days with him.

He entered our lives when we were grieving. He has filled them with love ever since. 🐾❤️

The shelter manager stopped us before we entered the kennel area and said quietly, “If you take the male Bernese Mountain Dog out for a walk, don’t shut the door on the female. She’ll panic and could hurt herself trying to reach him.”

We had come to the shelter planning to bring home just one dog.

Our farmhouse has a big yard, but like most families, we still have a budget to think about. One dog felt responsible. Manageable.

Then we saw them.

Two Bernese Mountain Dogs pressed tightly together in the back corner of a kennel, sitting on a thin blanket against the cold concrete wall. Their large bodies were touching so closely they almost looked like one gentle dog with two faces.

Their shelter names were Diesel and Nova.

A volunteer quietly told us they had already been returned twice—not because they were aggressive. The staff described them as some of the gentlest dogs in the building.

The problem was their bond.

If Diesel left the kennel without Nova, she panicked. She cried, scratched at the door, and trembled until he returned. If Nova disappeared from sight, Diesel paced and whined like his whole world had fallen apart.

They weren’t difficult.

They were simply deeply connected.

The shelter was running out of space, and staff had started discussing separating them to make things easier.

I watched Diesel slowly rest his enormous head across Nova’s shoulder.

Both Bernese Mountain Dogs were trembling slightly, their soft eyes following every person who walked past.

My husband looked at me.

Then he looked back at the two frightened dogs.

He didn’t ask about the extra food, the space, or the vet bills.

He picked up two leashes.

“We’re not the kind of people who split up a family,” he said.

So now our farmhouse belongs to two gentle giants. They share the couch, follow us into every room, and somehow take up almost the entire bed every night.

Our vet bills doubled.

Our bed mysteriously shrank.

But our home became fuller.

Bringing both of them home became the best decision we never planned to make.
