✨ Spots Left in Upcoming Loose Leash Walking Classes ✨

Does your dog act like he’s pulling a sled when you take him anywhere on leash? The focus of this short, four-week class is to help you and your dog have a more enjoyable walk. There is one spot available in the class that begins on Wednesday, June 17th at 10:00am at the Hartland location. There are also spots available in the class that starts Tuesday, June 23rd at 7:40pm in our Pewaukee location.

In this class, we focus on less pulling and more engagement from both ends of the leash! The key to harmonious walks is LESS restraint, not more restraint. The more you can stop micromanaging your dog during walks, the more enjoyable the walks will become. We will show you how to have realistic expectations and begin to develop a new habit. You will learn that there are things that contribute to a good walk or not so good walk. It is so important to watch the body language of your dog. Your walk actually starts BEFORE you exit the house/car, etc. This is a fun class filled with lots of walking exercises. Dogs of all ages are welcome. Dogs must be okay on leash around other dogs. This is not a class for reactive dogs (those who bark and lunge excessively on leash). Class size is limited.

Cheers to the handler and dog teams that graduated from Wednesday afternoon Rally-O class in Pewaukee. These hard-working teams gained communication and cooperation skills while having fun. They came so far - starting with playing on leash to working each course off lead. It was a pleasure to see how far and fast each team advanced. We humans know that every person has different personal space needs. Some people are comfortable being really close to other people while others like to stand or sit much farther apart.

The same is true of dogs. Each dog has an invisible safe space – a safety bubble – that represents their comfort zone. More confident dogs have a small circle of trust, but more fearful dogs require more space. This space is where they can relax and let their guard down. It is important that we respect this space for all dogs, but especially for those more anxious dogs. Once a dog’s emotional needs are met, we can begin to utilize the many positive reinforcement tools at our disposal to desensitize him to the cause of his worries and build trust and confidence. Being aware of signs that your dog may be uncomfortable – like lip licking or turning away – will help you tell if their space bubble is being invaded. Always watch for signs of distress and respect your dog’s safe space. Have you noticed the size of your dog’s space bubble?

Loose leash walking teams did a fun drill using cheese balanced on a spoon. The purpose of this exercise was to encourage the handler to walk smoothly enough with their dog (while keeping their dog from advancing to the end of the leash) so that the cheese stayed on the spoon. It was just all around FUN too!

Congratulations to the amazing caregivers and dogs who graduated from Agility 1 class on Tuesday night in Hartland! This class was all about communication and connection as the teams first encountered new equipment and by graduation night were mastering challenging courses together. They’ve proven anything is possible when you work together! Here’s to many more fun-filled adventures! Can’t wait to see you back in action again soon! 🐾🐾
