““Training” does not necessarily mean teaching your dog to “sit” on cue. Rather it is a process of observing your dog and opening up clear lines of communication/ reinforcement systems that fulfill both the dogs’ as well as the humans’ needs for safety and a relationship free of conflict.” – Elisabeth Weiss, Dog Relations

We do teach you to how to teach your dogs basic skills, but training is so much more than that. Once you have established clear communication and developed a good relationship with your dog, there are no limits to what your dog can learn!

We believe in the five freedoms of good animal welfare. Do you?

Being a good pet parent involves more than just meeting our dog’s basic needs. It is our job to look out for them and protect them. We should provide them with the best nutrition, health care, shelter, physical exercise, mental enrichment and training that we can. We advocate reward-based, force-free methods for training our family members. Please do your research when choosing a dog trainer. Any “trainer” that denies one of the five freedoms listed below will almost certainly damage your dog further rather than solving any issues you are having. Withholding food/water, resorting to pain (shock collars, prong/choke collars, leash pops, etc.) or intimidation may permanently damage your relationship with your dog. This simply isn’t necessary for training and is certainly not humane. Would you do the same to teach a child?

The five freedoms include the following:

*Freedom from hunger and thirst (safe water and the most nutritious food your budget allows)

*Freedom from discomfort (safe shelter, fear-free handling and training)

*Freedom from pain, injury, or disease (proper veterinary care/medication, humane treatment)

*Freedom to express normal behavior (choice to sniff, room to safely run and play)

*Freedom from fear and distress (informed caregiver who recognizes their fear and protects them)

Let’s do all we can to help our furkids live their best lives.

Recently, Ricochet was gifted some new toys. We tried one of them out last weekend. Agility is such a fun way to build confidence and foster teamwork.

I love to watch him in slow motion. Do you think he was enjoying himself?

Wednesday ~

“Class was amazing! Instructors were amazing! I didn’t realize all of the psychology that is involved in canine behavior, which helped me to better understand my dog. I will definitely be taking more classes! It was so much fun!”

Congratulations to the teams that graduated from Basic Manners on Thursday evening in Hartland. They not only learned how to help their adolescent dogs develop their basic manners skills and impulse control, but they also learned how to better communicate with them, building trust and confidence in each other. It was evident that they put in the work that it takes to make a great team. We are so proud of how far they have come! 🐕

“Animals who have more choices, and therefore more control, are happier and easier to live with. Here are a few ways you can give your pets more choice and enrich their lives at the same time:

🐾 Make every meal an adventure. Most pets enjoy working for their food, so turn snack time into game time. Hide toys stuffed with food for your dog to find.

🐾 Make every walk a choice-rich walk. Let Fido choose which way to go and when to sniff.

🐾 Let your pet choose when and whether to be petted. Stop and think before handling your pet.

Adding consistent choices to your pet’s life can transform your home!” – Irith Bloom, Co-Founder and Chief Training Officer at Porter Labs, Inc. and Director of Training, The Sophisticated Dog, LLC
