Just to remind everyone...since we have being seeing dogs turning up in common places as strays.
Responsible pet ownership means preparing for the unexpected in life and having a plan. Sudden changes in health, housing, or income can make pet care difficult or impossible. Creating a care plan before the unexpected happens ensures your pet stays safe and supported.
Consider working with a trusted friend or family member who can step in to work with your pet’s routines and medical needs, and keep veterinary records easily accessible.
While shelters work hard to help animals in need, they're not the best environments for a well-loved pet to end up unexpectedly. When you plan ahead, you give your pet the continued feeling of safety and security they deserve.
Why Rehoming First Is Best:
Pets that come from a home often experience more stress in a shelter than stray animals. They lose familiar scents, surroundings, routines, and people. That’s why we strongly recommend trying to rehome your pet before contacting the shelter.
Rehoming Options
• Asking friends, family, or coworkers
• Posting on neighborhood apps or social media
• Using trusted rehoming services, such as:
o Rehome by Adopt a Pet (rehome.adoptapet.com)
o Rescue Me! (www.rescueme.org)
o Home to Home (home-home.org/rehome)
Please also keep in mind that rehoming can take a bit of time. You must be patient with the process and be honest about your pet's habits and behaviors. If you know that you are "going to have to" rehome your pet, don't wait until the last minute expecting someone to take the pet right away.
