Summer is beautiful here in Hartford!

It is also wet, muddy, chaotic, and somehow always tracked directly across the cleanest part of your floor.

If your dog gets extra excited coming in from outside, summer can make doorway manners, paw handling, and post-walk cleanup feel like a daily event.

A few small routines can make a big difference:

Keep towels by the door
Practice pausing before coming inside
Reward your dog for standing still during paw wipes
Pair handling with treats so cleanup feels less stressful
Keep nails trimmed to make walks and movement more comfortable

For many dogs, grooming and handling are skills that can be built gradually.

The goal isn’t perfection.

The goal is helping your dog feel comfortable enough that summer cleanup doesn’t become a wrestling match in the entryway.

If grooming, paw handling, or general spring chaos has been a struggle, Onward Bound can help make everyday care feel easier.

Some dogs don’t just “dislike” fireworks.

They panic.

They shake, hide, pant, drool, pace, bark, try to escape, or completely shut down.

If that sounds like your dog, please know this: you are not failing them by talking to your vet.

For many dogs, fireworks anxiety may need more than a cozy bed and a frozen Kong.

Your veterinarian can help you understand whether medication or other support may be appropriate for your dog. And it’s much better to have that conversation before the fireworks begin.

Training and management matter.

So does your dog’s emotional and physical safety.

A good fireworks plan may include:

Environmental management
Comfort and safety
Vet-guided support
Updated ID
Earlier potty breaks
Lower expectations for behavior that night

Your dog isn’t being stubborn.

They’re scared.

And scared dogs need support, not pressure.

“A tired dog is a good dog” gets repeated a lot — but it leaves out a pretty important detail:

Dogs don’t just need to be worn out.
They need the right kind of activity and enough rest to recover.

That’s especially true in summer.

When it’s hot out, long walks, intense play, or too much activity can sometimes leave dogs more overstimulated, more irritable, or more unable to settle — not less.

What often helps more is balance:

sniffy walks during cooler hours
food puzzles or work-to-eat meals
short training sessions
chewing and licking activities
rest in a cool, quiet space

A “good dog” isn’t a dog who’s been pushed to exhaustion.

A dog who can move, learn, decompress, and rest is usually in a much better place.

And if you’re trying to figure out what your dog actually needs this summer, we can help.

Hey Hartford Pet Parents, your dog’s winter coat is moving out.

Unfortunately, it has chosen your couch, clothes, car, and probably at least one cup of coffee as its new home.

Summer shedding season is real, and regular grooming can help your dog feel more comfortable as warmer weather moves in.

A few summer grooming basics that help:

Brush regularly, especially if your dog has a thick or long coat
Check behind the ears, under the collar, armpits, and back legs for mats
Keep nails trimmed for comfortable walks and outdoor adventures
Wipe muddy paws before the backyard becomes part of your flooring
Watch for skin irritation, ticks, burrs, or debris after outdoor time

Summer grooming isn’t just about keeping your dog looking tidy.

It helps support healthier skin, reduce matting, and makes your pup more comfortable.

And if brushing at home turns into a full-body workout, Onward Bound’s Fear-Free grooming team can help make coat care feel calmer and more manageable.

One of the biggest puppy myths is that socialization means your puppy needs to meet every dog, every person, and experience every possible thing as fast as possible.

But good socialization is not about overwhelming your puppy.

It’s about helping them build positive, age-appropriate experiences with the world around them.

That can include:

Seeing people calmly from a distance
Hearing new sounds while getting treats
Practicing gentle handling
Exploring new surfaces
Learning to recover after small surprises
Watching other dogs without needing to rush up to them

The goal is confidence, not chaos.

Puppy Kindergarten gives puppies a safe place to learn early skills while helping guardians understand what healthy socialization can actually look like.

Open Enrollment Puppy Kindergarten is for puppies 8–16 weeks only.

As the weather warms up, many families want to bring their dogs along for outdoor activities.

But restaurants, patios, and events can be overwhelming if dogs haven’t practiced those skills yet.

Some helpful things to start working on now:

✔ settling calmly beside you
✔ ignoring food nearby
✔ staying relaxed as people walk past

Practicing these skills early can make spring and summer outings far more enjoyable.

Ticks can hide in small, warm spots on your dog’s body.

A quick daily check can make a big difference in preventing disease.

Regular grooming can also make these checks easier.
