If a breeder doesn't do congenital health testing on the parents, and doesn't offer LIFETIME congenital health, find one that does!
Dachshunds are prone to congenital health issues if they come from breeders who are not breeding to eliminate those congenital health issues.
Every Dachshund is going to be prone to IVDD, it is not condition that can be guaranteed against. A simple jump from a bed, step, couch, chair, lap, over a log, them being overweight, can trigger this condition. We at Mac Fam Dachshunds can not guarantee against this condition. No breeder will guarantee against this condition due to the many variables in the raising of the dog that ties into this. Two famous Dachshunds that we love so much came down with IVDD despite coming from ethical, responsible breeders. They were kept in impeccable health, no stressful exercise allowed, no jumping off of things, etc. Crusoe the Celebrity Dachshund and Harlso the Balancing Dachshund both got IVDD. Sadly, Harlso lost his fight with the disease last fall. We were saddened to learn of his loss, he was an amazing dog that brought so much joy to people worldwide. Crusoe is doing so much better and at age 15, is living a great life and enjoying retirement!
I am posting this as an awareness. I have people ask me why we don't guarantee against IVDD. Because it can present with any Dachshund, any time, any where. I can advise you on how to do things to prevent it, such as use Doggo Ramps (created by Ryan, Crusoe's "dad"). They are made in North America. Best ramps you will ever find. We have two of them, and getting ready to buy a third for our fifth wheel camper for when we go camping!
Link for the ramp is below!
And no, I do NOT get paid for referrals! This is an honest and truthful referral!
