I was looking through some holdbacks this morning and found myself having the same argument I’ve been having for years.

Part of me wants to keep everything. Not because every animal is some future game changer, but because I know where they came from. I remember the pairing, I remember the litter, and I’ve spent enough time around them to appreciate what makes each one unique.

The problem is that keeping everything is a terrible business strategy and usually not a great breeding strategy either. At some point you have to decide whether you’re keeping an animal because it moves you closer to where you’re trying to go or because you simply don’t want to part with it.

I’m not sure that gets easier with experience. If anything, I think it gets harder.

Most of the time, that’s exactly how people end up needing another rack.

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that a lot of people get into reptiles wanting to become breeders.

There’s nothing wrong with that.

What I find interesting is how few people seem excited about simply becoming really good keepers first.

Breeding gets the attention. The babies get the attention. The projects get the attention.

But all of that is built on husbandry.

The people I’ve seen last the longest in this hobby usually aren’t the people chasing the next big thing. They’re the people who genuinely enjoy taking care of the animals.

I think that’s why I’ve never had a problem cleaning cages, feeding animals, or doing the repetitive work that comes with reptiles. The hobby part came first for me.

The breeding and business side grew out of that.

Maybe that’s why I still enjoy it after all these years.
