🐾 Porcupine Quills & Pets: What You Should Know 🦔

Dogs are naturally curious, and encounters with porcupines can happen quickly—especially in wooded or rural areas. When a dog tries to investigate or bite a porcupine, the quills can easily become embedded in the mouth, face, and skin.

Why porcupine quills are dangerous:
⚠️ Quills have tiny barbs that allow them to work deeper into the skin over time.
⚠️ They commonly lodge in sensitive areas such as the face, nose, mouth, chest, and paws.
⚠️ If not treated, quills can cause infection, swelling, abscesses, and tissue damage.
⚠️ In rare cases, quills can migrate deeper into the body, including the chest or abdomen, leading to serious complications.

What to do if your pet gets quilled:
❗ Do not attempt to remove or cut the quills yourself. They can break and become more difficult to remove.
❗ Keep your pet calm and try to prevent them from pawing at the quills.
❗ Contact your veterinarian right away for safe removal and proper treatment.

Most pets need sedation or anesthesia so the quills can be safely and completely removed. Your veterinarian will also check for hidden quills and may prescribe pain medication or antibiotics if needed.

If your pet has a run-in with a porcupine, call your veterinarian as soon as possible—the sooner quills are treated, the better the outcome. In more severe cases, some pets may require multiple visits to ensure all quills are properly removed. 🐶💙
