Rayney & her daughter Cedar. ๐ฅน๐ค
This didnโt happen overnight.
When 18 mo Cedar came back to us 3ยฝ months ago, she had to learn how to become part of a pack again, and Rayney had to learn how to share her space with an adolescent daughter she hadnโt lived with since puppyhood. Plus, she had a 2 week old litter on the ground she needed to protect from 'strangers'.
There were tense moments. There were setbacks. There were times we questioned whether we would ever get here.
So we slowed things down. We managed situations that were too much. We worked on calmness instead of excitement. We gave them space when they needed it and opportunities to be together when they were ready. Most importantly, we stopped expecting the relationship to develop on OUR timeline.
Dogs need time to build trust, learn one another's boundaries, and figure out where they fit. Sometimes progress is so gradual you don't realize how far you've come until you see something like this.
3ยฝ months of patience, consistency, management, and perseverance.
And today, Rayney and Cedar chose to curl up together and take a nap. ๐ค
It may look like an ordinary moment.
To us, it's anything but.
