All dogs respond to positive reinforcement-based training! No breed requires a more firm method than others. Science-based training methods focus on building trust between trainers, owners, and the dogs.

There is a misconception that "tough love" is necessary for "stubborn" dogs. Research consistently shows that punishment-based training methods can increase anxiety, suppress warning signs (leading to bite incidents), and damage relationships with owners and their pets.

Move away from methods that rely on discomfort, fear, intimidation, and coercion. Ensure your trainer is current on research and practices!

TK is a rescued pup with a mystery background. Found tied up to a dumpster in Uptown three years ago, TK has found a loving home. He is obsessed with his human toddler brother, especially during dinner time! He can be a little overprotective of his new best friend, so we’ve been working on accepting strangers.

Good Dog Training ONLY uses positive reinforcement training. This style of training rewards desired actions with treats, praise, or play, which makes the dog much more likely to repeat those good behaviors. Unlike punishment-based methods, this approach avoids causing stress, fear, or aggression- keeping your relationship with your dog happy and trusting!

As evidence of their passion and commitment to stay up-to-date on science-based behavior theory, education, and practices, certified 🐕 dog behavior geeks Layne and Jill recently took part in the 2026 NC State University 🐾 College of Veterinary Medicine's Companion Animal Behavior Symposium.

They learned invaluable knowledge from the veterinary professional's perspective on:
🐾 resource guarding
🐾 fear-based reactivity toward people
🐾 the relationship between pain and fearful behavior
🐾 how physiology and the gut-brain axis affect behavior
🐾 using pattern games to reduce anxiety and arousal
🐾 keeping children safe
🐾 fear-free grooming techniques

Layne and Jill thrive on learning and can't wait to put their knowledge to work helping their clients!
