Hi All! We wanted to share some information we received from Animal Hospital of Dauphin regarding Cyclospora. See the message below:
We wanted to share an important food safety reminder for clients who regularly feed fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, or leafy greens to their pets.
A recent Cyclospora outbreak linked to fresh produce has been reported in parts of the Midwest, including Michigan. While Cyclospora is primarily a human health concern and is not considered a significant risk for pets, owners of rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, reptiles, and other pets that eat fresh produce may handle these foods more frequently and should take a few extra precautions.
When preparing fresh produce for your pets:
-Wash all produce thoroughly under cool running water before serving.
-Firm produce can be gently scrubbed with a clean produce brush.
-Wash leafy greens, herbs, and berries carefully, even if they appear clean.
-Consider purchasing whole produce instead of pre-packaged salad mixes when possible.
-Remove the outer leaves of lettuce and wash the remaining leaves well.
-Use clean, potable water to wash produce, and avoid untreated water sources.
-Wash your hands, cutting boards, knives, bowls, and other utensils with soap and water after handling fresh fruits and vegetables.
These simple food safety practices can help reduce your risk of exposure while preparing fresh foods for both your family and your pets.
If you have any questions about your pet's diet or food safety, please don't hesitate to contact our office.
