Most dogs with this type of elbow problem (elbow dysplasia) are diagnosed before they're a year old.
Sonny wasn't.
At 8 years old, this German Shepherd came to www.HRVSS.com because he was limping on his left front leg.
The interesting part? This wasn't Sonny's first experience with this condition.
Two years ago, we removed an Ununited Anconeal Process (UAP) from his right elbow.
After recovering well, he returned to HRVSS when his left elbow started causing problems.
After an exam and X-rays, we diagnosed a left UAP, a form of elbow dysplasia.
You can see the red triangle around the UAP fragment.
While UAP is considered a developmental condition, it isn't always diagnosed when dogs are young.
During surgery, we removed the large fragment (see bottom picture, the UAP fragment, next to a quarter).
There is a short video of the removal in the 1st comment - not to be watched by the faint of heart !!!
On the postop X-ray, the UAP fragment is gone.
Now, Sonny needs to heal peacefully at home.

If your dog suddenly won't bear weight on a leg or develops a limp, don't assume (s)he's "just getting older."

Dr Pete Baia is kind of a rockstar.
His reputation extends well beyond central Pennsylvania.
Tessa, a 12 year old Sheltie (posing below with nurse Kristen), and her owner traveled 6 hours from Columbus, Ohio, to seek his help.
Dr. Baia injected her arthritic wrists with a special product designed to reduce pain and improve mobility.

A big shout-out to Animal Wellness Clinic for the referral of Penney, an 8-year-old Doxie who had multiple bladder infections.
The reason?
A recessed v***a, or redundant v***ar fold.
Dr. Pete Baia successfully performed an episioplasty (aka vulvoplasty) to remove the extra skin.
As you can see in the photos, her v***a was completely hidden by excess skin before surgery. During the procedure, Dr. Baia carefully removed exactly the right amount of skin, allowing the v***a to be fully exposed and function normally.
See the transformation below.
Penney is now on the road to recovery.
Many dogs with a recessed v***a suffer from repeated UTIs, and often compulsive licking of the area.

🐾 Recovery Update: Poe
Meet Poe, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever who was referred to HRVSS by Dover Animal Hospital for a torn ACL in his left knee.
A torn ACL can make everyday activities uncomfortable, leading to limping, difficulty standing, and less enjoyment of walks, playtime, and other favorite activities. For active dogs like Poe, restoring comfort and stability can help them get back to doing what they love.
Dr. Pete Baia performed a left TPLO surgery to stabilize Poe’s knee and support his recovery.
✨ We’re happy to share that Poe is healing well and making excellent progress on his road back to an active, happy life. 💙
👉 Signs to watch for: If your dog is limping, favoring a back leg, struggling to stand, or avoiding stairs and jumping, it could indicate a knee injury. Talk with your veterinarian about whether a referral to HRVSS for a surgical consultation may be appropriate for your pet.

🐾 Recovery Update: Coco

Some patients steal hearts the moment they walk through the door, and Coco was definitely one of them. 💙

Coco is a 2-year-old French Bulldog who visited HRVSS after being referred by for chronic ear problems that just wouldn’t quit.

After dealing with ongoing ear infections, Coco underwent a Total Ear Canal Ablation (TECA). This surgery removes the diseased ear canal and is often recommended when infections become severe, painful, and no longer respond well to medical treatment.

The procedure was performed by both of our surgeons working together, giving Coco the best possible care for this complex surgery.

✨ The outcome: Coco is recovering well and can finally look forward to life without the constant discomfort of recurring ear infections.

🐾 Meet our patient, Bentley!

Bentley is an 11-year-old Maltese who came to HRVSS after being referred by for a torn ACL in his right knee.

🔎 The challenge:
Bentley was no stranger to knee surgery. Two years ago, Dr. Phil Zeltzman performed a left TPLO to repair his other knee. This time, Bentley injured the ACL in his right knee, making it difficult and uncomfortable for him to get around.

💡 The solution:
Dr. Pete Baia performed a right TPLO surgery at HRVSS. TPLO changes the angle of the knee so it can stay stable and function normally, even after an ACL tear.

✨ The outcome:
With both knees now repaired, Bentley is recovering well and getting back to doing the things he loves. 💙

👉 When to seek help:
