National Veterinary Technician Week (October 18-24th) is the perfect time to recognize the dedicated professionals who are essential to every veterinary clinic: our licensed veterinary technicians (LVTs)!

LVTs are the backbone of veterinary medicine, combining technical expertise, compassion, and teamwork to provide exceptional patient care. Their responsibilities extend far beyond assisting veterinarians. They obtain patient histories, perform laboratory testing, take radiographs, monitor anesthesia, assist in surgery, administer medications, provide nursing care, and help educate clients about their pets’ and livestock health. They also monitor hospitalized patients, maintain medical equipment, manage treatments, and help ensure the clinic operates efficiently and safely.

Behind every smooth appointment, successful surgery, and comfortable recovery is often an LVT working diligently behind the scenes. This National Vet Tech Week, we are immensely grateful for our licensed veterinary technicians for their skill, dedication, and unwavering compassion! Veterinary medicine, and our clinic as a whole, simply wouldn’t be the same without them!

If you happen to be in the clinic this week, make sure to thank your technician! 🐶🐱🐮🐴

Feline Vaccines! 💉🐱🦠

Immunizations are a crucial component of keeping your pets safe from disease. Here is a breakdown of each vaccine and why we recommend it for our feline friends!

💉 Rabies: The same vaccine we use in dogs can be used in cats (and other mammals too!) A viral disease that is transmitted when an infected animal bites another animal. This virus travels up the spinal cord before reaching the brain and salivary glands. Once there, clinical signs can occur, and the disease is nearly always fatal at this point. Vaccination is the cornerstone of prevention! It's important to note that it is only effective if given before the virus has the chance to enter the nervous system.

💉Distemper Combo: The FVRCP Vaccine is a combo vaccine that protects cats against three different highly contagious viral infections - Feline Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia. These viruses are very common and can survive in the environment for long periods of time. Due to their sturdiness, pet owners can track these diseases indoors on their clothes, shoes, etc., making this a core vaccine for indoor and outdoor cats.

💉Feline Leukemia Virus: The FeLV vaccine protects felines against a deadly and incurable virus. It spreads through saliva, bites, and even close contact between cats. This virus is found worldwide and can be found more frequently among stray cats. If your cat will be outdoors at any time, we recommend testing and vaccinating against this virus.

Vaccines! 💉🦠🧫🐶

Immunizations are a crucial component of keeping your pets safe from disease. Here is a breakdown of each vaccine we offer at HVC and why we recommend it for our canine companions!

💉 Rabies: A viral disease that is transmitted when an infected animal bites another animal. Rabies is also a zoonotic disease, meaning humans can contract this disease as well, making it even more important to have your pets protected!

💉 Distemper Combo: This is a combination vaccine that contains protection against Distemper Virus, Infectious Canine Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus. All of these viruses are highly contagious and often fatal. These viruses can attack the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems.

💉 Lyme/Leptospirosis: Lyme disease is caused by a bacterium that is transmitted to dogs through the bite of an infected tick, while Leptospirosis is caused by a bacterium spread through the urine of wild and domestic mammals. Humans can also contract both of these diseases. Lyme disease can ONLY be transmitted through a tick bite, but humans can contract Leptospirosis from their sick pets or wildlife. This vaccine has been upgraded from a Life Style Vaccine to a Core Vaccine in the last year due to the severity of symptoms and high risk of fatality if either of these diseases is contracted. **We do offer both combo and separate Lyme and Lepto vaccines**

💉 Bordetella: More commonly known as Kennel Cough, this vaccine protects your dog from Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex and infectious tracheobronchitis. Several viruses and bacteria can cause Kennel Cough in dogs. Dogs who travel, stay at the kennel, frequent the groomers or parks are at the highest risk of this condition. If any of these locations match your pet's lifestyle, we recommend they receive this vaccine as well.

🌈 Rainbow Bridge 🐾 By Edna Clyne-Rekhy

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, your pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water, and sunshine, and friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and strength, those who were hurt are made better and strong again, like we remember them before they go to heaven. They are happy and content except for one small thing—they each miss someone very special to them who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are shining, his body shakes. Suddenly he begins to run from the herd, rushing over the grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cuddle in a happy hug never to be apart again. You and your pet are in tears. Your hands again cuddle his head and you look again into his trusting eyes, so long gone from life, but never absent from your heart, and then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together.✨

Therapeutic laser is the application of light energy to areas of the body to stimulate healing. This is known as photobiomodulation.

Laser light is different from “normal light” because it is one individual wavelength and is focused. Due to laser being concentrated, it allows for relief of pain and or inflammation.

Our clinic is excited to treat your animals with this advanced technology! Some common therapies include muscular sprain/strain, osteoarthritis, post-operative application around incisions, wounds, and inflammation.

This goat here is receiving laser treatment to help reduce inflammation of his lungs associated with chronic pneumonia. By applying laser to his lungs, we can provide almost immediate relief!

Adding laser to our clinic allows for us to provide another modality when it comes to treating your pets/livestock. We offer individual treatments (wounds, etc) as well as packages (think osteoarthritis management).

Call into the clinic for any questions or to schedule a laser treatment today!
