Miss Katie came in to see us today for her senior bi-annual exam and some bloodwork monitoring. Katie has a condition called hyperthyroidism that we are able to help manage with a daily medication. Over time, changes in the amount of medication or supportive care can be needed, so monitoring her physical exam and bloodwork is important.

Hyperthyroidism is one of the most common hormonal conditions in senior cats, typically affecting cats over 10 years old. It occurs when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone, causing the body's metabolism to speed up.

๐Ÿฑ Could Your Cat Have Hyperthyroidism?

Is your older cat eating like a champ but still losing weight? That could be more than just "old age."

Common signs include:
๐Ÿพ Weight loss despite a good (or increased) appetite
๐Ÿพ Increased thirst and urination
๐Ÿพ Vomiting or diarrhea
๐Ÿพ Hyperactivity or restlessness
๐Ÿพ Poor or unkempt hair coat
๐Ÿพ Increased vocalization, especially at night

The good news? Hyperthyroidism is treatable. Treatment options may include daily medication, a prescription diet, radioactive iodine therapy, or surgery, depending on your cat's needs and overall health.

Early diagnosis is important because untreated hyperthyroidism can affect the heart, kidneys, and blood pressure. A simple blood test, along with a physical exam, can often identify the condition.

If your senior cat has been losing weight or acting differently, don't assume it's just aging. We'd be happy to evaluate them and discuss the best treatment options.

โค๏ธ Healthy cats start with early detection.

AUGUST IS BACK TO SHOOL MONTH!!
As the back-to-school routine begins, your pet's schedule changes too! ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿพ
With the house suddenly quieter during the day, some pets may experience boredom, anxiety, or changes in behavior. Others may need a little time to adjust to new feeding, walking, or playtime routines.
Help make the transition easier by:
๐Ÿถ Sticking to a consistent feeding and exercise schedule.
๐Ÿงฉ Providing enrichment toys or puzzle feeders while you're away.
๐Ÿšถ Scheduling daily walks and one-on-one playtime.
โค๏ธ Watching for signs of stress, such as excessive barking, destructive behavior, or changes in appetite.

A little planning can help your furry family member feel happy, secure, and healthy all school year long!

If you notice your pet struggling with the change in routine, we're here to help. Contact us to schedule an appointment and discuss ways to keep your pet comfortable during the transition.
