Vaccines are important, but an annual exam is just as valuable! A thorough exam helps us identify current concerns, spot early or potential issues before they become bigger problems, and make sure your horse stays on the right track. Just as importantly, an annual exam gives us a baseline for your horse’s normal. Documenting that information over time can be incredibly helpful when changes occur in the future and helps us better recognize what’s different for your horse. From eyes and teeth to heart, lungs, musculoskeletal health, body condition, and everything in between, a yearly exam is an important part of proactive equine care. ❤️

It was a great day connecting with farmers, agricultural professionals, and community members from across the state while sharing the important role veterinary medicine plays in supporting South Carolina’s farms, livestock, and agritourism operations. We’re grateful for opportunities like this to step outside the clinic, build relationships within our agricultural community, and advocate for the animals and people who keep South Carolina agriculture thriving. Thank you to the South Carolina Agritourism Association and D&S Plantation for having us! 🌾

Recently Dr. Amber Grimes and Licensed Veterinary Technician Madi Lawson attended the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Annual Conference in Minnesota.

Continuing education is an important part of being a bovine veterinarian and a licensed technician, and this conference provided valuable opportunities to learn about the latest advancements in cattle health, herd management, and veterinary medicine.

They enjoyed connecting with fellow bovine veterinarians, sharing experiences, and bringing new knowledge and ideas home to better serve our patients, producers, and the cattle industry.

Dr. Amber says “I am proud to be a cow vet and always looking for ways to become a better one”, and she is excited to bring home the new tips and tricks she learned!

We are so happy to report that Gracie Belle is back to her happy, goofy self after a serious scare!

Recently, Dr. Grimes treated Gracie Belle for a severe traumatic puncture and laceration to her eyeball. Unfortunately, the veterinary team determined the damage was too extensive to save the eye, making emergency surgery the most humane option.

An enucleation (the surgical removal of the entire eyeball) often sounds intimidating to owners. However, it is a vital, pain-relieving procedure when an eye is irreparably damaged or causing significant pain. Removing the source of injury prevents infection, relieves chronic suffering, and allows the horse to heal completely.

As you can see from her neat post-operative sutures, Gracie Belle recovered beautifully! Horses adapt incredibly well to having one eye. With just a little time to adjust, they continue to enjoy normal, active, and high-quality lives.

Cases like this are a critical reminder that prompt veterinary care and emergency intervention make all the difference. We’re grateful we could help Gracie Belle get back on the road to recovery!

🐴 A Little Organization Makes Barn Calls Run Smoothly! 🩺

For barn managers, boarding facilities, and larger herds, a little preparation before our team arrives goes a long way. An organized checklist keeps appointments timely, efficient, and stress-free for you and your horses!

Before your scheduled barn visit, please prepare a list that includes:

Horse Details: Each horse’s registered and barn name

Contact Info: Owner’s name and best phone number

Services Needed: Specific vaccines, Coggins, or routine care each horse is due for

Health Notes: Current medications, active health concerns, or specific questions to discuss

Billing Details: Clearly designated person responsible for payment

Pro Tip: Please make sure horses are caught, halter-trained, and ready in their stalls or grooming areas when their turn comes!

A little preparation helps prevent missed vaccines, avoids confusion, and allows our veterinary team to give every animal the dedicated attention they deserve. Thank you for helping us keep your herd healthy and on schedule! 👇

Mentoring the next generation of food animal and large animal veterinarians is one of Dr. Grimes’ absolute favorite parts of her job! 🩺🐄

This summer, Dr. Grimes welcomed 4th-year UGA College of Veterinary Medicine students Anna and Dylan as externs at Carter Veterinary Services. From early morning farm calls to hands-on field procedures and emergency cases—and everything in between—they embraced every single opportunity to learn, grow, and care for both livestock and the producers who depend on them.

Investing in future veterinarians is one of the most rewarding aspects of our profession, and we are so grateful to play a small role in their journey.

Anna and Dylan, thank you for your hard work, positive attitudes, and dedication to learning! We can't wait to see all that you accomplish, and we know the future of veterinary medicine is in great hands. 💙🐴🐄
