This might be a repeat but, I still continuously think about everything I got out of this past clinic season. I find “themes” or “light bulb moments” that show up when I am teaching and riding the horses afterwards, and show the importance of that piece I learned to dig further into.

Lately, I’ve still been focused (rather obsessed with) on balance, both physically and mentally for our horses. We need to get to the feet in order to get to their minds but we have to search for their minds to get their feet. Both in turn, put us on the hunt for balance. And if we are really on the path, our horses start to hunt for both kinds of balance too.

It’s amazing what a horse will do for us if we support them, and show them we want to keep them in a balanced state. 🤍

I love days like these. I didn’t necessarily ride but I got to spend time with each of my horses and just enjoy them while I was working on chores. I love how friendly and curious they are, and choose to come visit/spend time with me. 🤍 Happy warm Sunday!

It’s a special kind of job when you start the day at 7am, and don’t get to end it until about 7:45pm and feel like it flew by in a hurry, purely due to the enjoyment of the tasks.

Today was a buzzing around kind of day, from one place to the next. Four locations actually. But, it never fails when clients are smiling, horses are happy and I get to enjoy earning a living.

I fed my own horses, hit the first in town stop, took care of a horse in training, had a meeting, hit the second stop, rode a horse, rode another horse with a student out on a trail ride, then trimmed and reset a horse, really took my time due to a lesson cancellation, then headed out to another stop. Worked with a c**t on more halter breaking and ground work. He stood for his first trim all the way around afterwards. Trimmed 3 more. Then headed home to feed the home base herd and finish all my chores and things there. In between all of the things were scheduling texts, questions, comments, phone calls etc..

It’s a hustle. But a really good kind of hustle.

On long days, most people often feel relieved when they get home, but those of us who really appreciate our jobs and this line of work, often find themselves relaxed and looking forward to the next day ahead.

The newest freshest chapter is about to start. 🤠 Phoebe Schmalzried Horsemanship X J.Schmalzried Farms officially has an outdoor arena. Phase one is complete with excavating and footing work done by Super M Excavating.

Sometimes you have let the kid horse lover loose, and dream bigger! It feels like a dream come true. I can’t wait to make miles and miles of tracks in this thing and share it with my favorite fellow horse lovers. 🥰 Let the footsteps and hoof prints begin!

Thank you Judd for snapping some neat photos of the other tid bit of my job. The farrier and Hoofcare world are a piece of the work I do, by going through the schooling I got a greater perspective on the horse quite literally from the ground up and how their feet effect them. While riding and teaching the horsemanship way is my main gig, it’s been a neat space to work in branching a gap between the farrier and horsemanship world. I have the utmost respect for those who do this job day and day out, trimming, shoeing (and sweating LOL), etc… but also love that I have the horsemanship handling priority for those horses I get to work on.

This horse world sure feels serious a majority of the time. Constantly criticizing ourselves, hard on ourselves or feeling as though we aren’t where we “should” be. Sometimes we need to just smile while we ride our horses, because hey we are up there, working hard, putting in the time, the effort and the dedication. Our horses can feel the smiles and so should we.

I was sure smiling atop my little bay horse, riding with Buck Brannaman this past weekend.

The word and theme of the weekend that resonated the most with me was balance. It struck me entirely just how important and how much influence it has, mentally and physically on a horse.

It’s our job to keep them balanced, not throw them off of it. It directly influences their want to work with us, and how far they are willing to go.

It’s so beautiful and so humbling to watch Buck riding, every single time. The undoubted willingness his horse has to make any move for him. And how everything is indeed in perfect balance.

It always feels like I’m heading back to the drawing board after a clinic like this to dig a little deeper. I can’t wait to keep working and see how much things change in another year from now.
