“The farther into this whole horsemanship thing that you come, the more difficult it’ll seem to get.” - Kip Fladland

He mentioned this to me a couple of times this past weekend over the time he has spent with us. We are so lucky he is so willing to keep teaching us.

Today we got the opportunity to watch Kip work a young pony that came from a kill lot off of a saddle horse and get her gentle enough so that she could be trimmed for the first time. Between the roping, watching him help the saddle horse he was riding who he said was greener to working other horses, and watching the shift in the pony was sure special. The photo above was one I was able to snap of him in the beginning of roping her.

“Chalk it up to experience”. A simple, yet well frequented quote coming from . There were things that I missed the timing, fumbled and worked on today that he remarked “chalk it up to experience”, there were also many moments he said to scrap it and start over. There’s no harm and no foul. If it doesn’t workout, just start over and try again. All I did was gain experience myself as well as my horse.

I walked in with nerves intact, worried about making a wrong move and left feeling relaxed and like I had gotten closer to my horses feet. There’s so much that’s comes from screwing up, stuff not working or even a lack of understanding that keeps us learning.

Booker brought his best sweet self to the lesson and I tried to take away as much as I could to get a little better for him. This lesson was just the beginning of the great weekend of learning from Kip to come!

As the season for clinics approaches and the inevitable pressure we put on ourselves as horsemen and women creeps in, it’s important to remember how much they are really here to help us.

I am completely guilty of putting this intrinsic pressure on myself and my horses when in reality I need to relax and find the pieces I need help with.

I recently listened to a podcast with (who is visiting us at in a week), about the process of building a bridle horse and getting the most of the horses we work with, and a huge take away was how much of building a bridle horse, or even just pushing yourself to be better is swinging a leg over a horse. Sometimes you need to just swing a leg over, you need more hours in a saddle, because those who spend more time will grow further.

This weekend wasn’t necessarily pretty or “working” toward the greater goal, but we sure did swing a leg over and put extra miles on.

It was the best way to put the best hoof forward into clinic season. We are entering relaxed, full of laughter, time spent with good friends, and some more miles under our belt. ☺️

A month or so ago, I had Booker in my work day schedule to make sure he got “worked” that day. I went out to catch him and found him peacefully snoozing in the softest part of the pasture. I took Buster’s quote in stride and went out to visit with my friend rather than catch him to work him. I spent a good 45 minutes sitting with him out there, petting and grooming him while he snoozed away. Never have I ever been able to sit there with a horse that long while they felt comfortable enough to stay relaxed. It slowed myself down in the best way. Sometimes the extra time taken to pet on them, or just be with them is just as important as the “working” steps you take with them.

The next day he surely walked up to me to come visit. Almost like he was coming to say hi to a friend. ☺️

Life on the personal farm lately. We’ve been making loads of changes, working to make things more efficient for the long term. It’s been so enjoyable to implement the new routine with everything we’ve done. Then along the way we are making the plans to make the next steps too. I’ve attended 8 or so of ‘s clinics now, and I feel like it takes me longer and longer to post each time because she always gives me more to think about each time. While some things may be review they really aren’t, the “review” things I’ve truly only scratched the surface on and show me new holes or peel back new layers. That’s the beauty of groundwork, you can never do enough. I might notice something different about it, or she might explain something slightly different that sparks a new question or thought.

It’s fun to look back and see photos from my first ever clinic with her and look just how far we’ve come. What a joy it has been to be on this journey.

It has been a BUSY couple of weeks. Jam packed and full of good stuff.

Last week I had the opportunity to head downstate to to catch up with my old polo coaches and check an item off of my bucket list. I got to stick and ball and do some polo things with a horse I started and trained myself. She was quiet and just as into it as I was. Not to mention how awesome it was to catch up with my old coaches and be an MSU Polo Alumni!

I also had time to do a few other fun things, like trying out an INCREDIBLE school horse for the Rising Hope Equestrian Center program and throwing an extra horse on the trailer too. 😊

It was a quick trip but it sure was a good one. I’ve been apart of two different horse worlds over time and it was so neat to watch things come full circle and connect them both.

A BIG thank you to Paul and Sarah Knapp at for their hospitality and for the newest addition to our program. I’ll surely have to make another trip back, maybe for a few chukkers next time. 😉

“Make him feel good about himself.” - Buck Brannaman

Today we made Phyllis feel good about herself. This mare is particularly tricky about getting her right lead. Being an OTTB, she’s quite left sided and struggles to travel to the right. We’ve been working as a collective to get her stronger, more balanced and willing to pick up that right lead at the canter. Sometimes it would take an extended amount of time to get there. Today, going to the left she picked up the right lead, instead of shutting her down for being “incorrect”, we swooped across the diagonal and switched to the right, so she was indeed “correct”. We made her a winner and surely feel good about herself. Her offering the more difficult thing, quickly became the new right answer. 🖤
