Want to know something crazy?

To some of you it's going to sound like A LOT.

To some of you it's going to sound like we're just getting started.

Either way...

As of this weekend, NINE HUNDRED kits have been born in our barn!

We are excited to show in Muleshoe with Roadrunner RBA next Saturday! Who is showing with us?

We are taking (all Youth) Dutch, Havanas & Satins, unfortunately not taking any Mini Satins this time they’re all bred or molting! 😂

Rustin has a Satin Siamese Senior Buck who did well at nationals looking to hop, he’s too closely related to the does Rustin’s keeping.

Jimmy (Hoppin’ J Rabbitry) will be sending 3 senior broken Satin does with Rustin.

There are 15 rabbit breeds on The Livestock Conservancy’s Conservation Priority List, several of which were developed in the United States. All heritage breed rabbits are genetically valuable with unique, desirable traits and it takes the hard work of dedicated breeders to ensure the survival of these breeds for the future!

We thoroughly enjoyed our day at LC4HRBA shows B & C yesterday! A lot of our favorite people were there and it’s probably one of the best last minute decisions I’ve made in awhile. I’m in a very rambly, sentimental mood this morning so this will be long, sorry.

The amount of families that love and cheer on these kids and genuinely want to see them help succeed and do what they can to push them towards that success never ceases to make me a little emotional. We never imagined that buying a rabbit to show would lead to such a community. We miss Kristen soooo much, but the community she showed us how to build and stand up for stands strongly together and I know she’d be proud.

For those of you that don’t know Kayleigh’s backstory- she started with broken New Zealand’s so she could show them in Randall County. She semi-affectionately refers to them as her giant potatoes. They were good, they were docile, but they were boring and heavy to her. From them she tried Satins with Rustin. Still too heavy. Then she tried Mini Satins and their personalities were still just not the match she was looking for. At convention Kristen had her check out Himalayans, but they were still just not her thing. She had great support from other breeders in all of these, but none were “just right”. She decided to try Havanas “so she could show them in Randall County” and hallelujah if we seem to have finally found her breed! She took her first RIS with a homegrown doe out of her very first pair from Jennifer Schimpf in Show C. She was inspired by Deb Morrisons pedigrees to strive for every single one of her breeders to be Grand Champions, so her main goal this show was to pick up a few more legs. AXKT1 from Suzanne Hemsath earned another leg with BOB in show B. She’s also made such sweet friendships with other youth Havana exhibitors.

Rustin’s story is quite different. Satins were his choice from the beginning. He had lots of success with Blacks, Brokens, Otters & Whites before decided to fully commit himself to Siamese. We’ve gotten quite close with the families that also had Satins yesterday, and the excitement when Jody Rosnik selected his Siamese Doe for BOS was so precious! Every one there understood how big of a win that was for his project.

Alysen & Adalyn enjoyed showing their Mini Satins. Coats weren’t right for wins, but they got some great comments on type and enjoyed watching their friends rabbits shine.

And just like that, our youngest is a big SEVEN year old! Happy birthday, Adalyn!

One of the neatest things about watching the kids grow in this hobby is asking them about a detail of their breeding plan to make sure they've considered that angle and realizing they're thinking generations down the line.

Siamese is a weird variety. Rustin spends as much time as he can picking others' brains about them, and that's one of the reasons he loves going to big events like NASS. He was told that breeding a Siamese to a White will darken the coat color while breeding a Siamese to a Black will lighten it. He was lining up the breeding of the doe who just one first in her class at NASS and asked me to ask another breeder if he could use a white buck.

Me: Isn't she pretty medium in color? Why don't you want to just use one of your Siamese bucks?

Rustin: She is, but I'm working on coat density and texture, so I need a white. Then, if the babies are too dark, I'll breed them to black.

Me: Carry on!

NASS Results

Biggest lesson learned? The year your breeds’ national show is in your home state may very well be the same year your rabbits choose not to produce anything. Go anyways!

Rustin -
1st Runner Up King in Royalty.
For this contest he had to judge 2 classes of rabbits, take a written exam and compete in at least one other contest of his choice. He chose to give a speech over the Siamese variety and enter the photography contest. In the show he got to see the work he’s put into his varieties pay off!
HTJOHNSONGRASS 1/10 Siamese sr doe
HTEHUD 3/6 Siamese sr buck
HTOWEN 3/10 broken sr buck
Honestly, the biggest win is that the Siamese were entered into an older age class based on weight. Since he started he’s been fighting to get them to grow larger, and a buck he was given at last NASS seemed to be the golden ticket to get there!

Adalyn -
Was entered in royalty but was not feeling it. She took the written exam, did “share your rabbit” which is similar to showmanship, and entered the craft and photography contests. She didn’t place, but we’re proud of her efforts! She’s also had a very dry year of breeding. Not for lack of trying, but the only Mini Satins she had to take were over a year old and did not compete well. Thankfully nest boxes are starting to fill up again, so maybe this next year of showing will go better!

Reba -
HT Tar “Tarragon”, was 4/14. Yep, he’s the same chin I’ve been talking about for over a year. Same story as Adalyn, I’m just thankful to finally have some in the nestbox!

And finally, WELCOME TO TEAM SHEEN, Alysen!
We almost always do family memberships to breed clubs, so it was news to Alysen that she’s technically been a member for 4 years already. We noticed her attitude towards NASS was different this year. “Can I show one of the Minis that’s going?” “Can I do the youth contests?” And we thought it was just because she was going to be there anyways. As we wandered the aisles after checking in she finally let out a huge sigh and said “If I could have brokens I’d want my own Minis, too!” It just so happened that when you enter youth contests you get raffle tickets for a pair of rabbits that have been donated by another breeder and the Minis were, you guessed it, brokens! Then, as luck would have it, her ticket was drawn! She is absolutely smitten with them (no, her Dutch are not going anywhere!) She also managed to pull off Runner Up Lady in the youth royalty contest and was such a big help on our clean up crew.

Kayleigh is still not interested in showing sheeny things again, she loves her luster, but she enjoyed seeing all the beautiful rabbits and some people she loves who show them. She entered the crafts and photography contests, didn’t win but had fun!
