Did you know❓
House of Misfits was founded by licensed veterinary professionals, and all of our board members are currently employed in the field!
Most of us have known each other since we were young (high school age), and we’ve spent almost two decades working alongside one another in veterinary medicine. Long before House of Misfits had a name, a nonprofit status, or an official mission statement, we were already doing what we do today: taking in the animals who needed us most and figuring out how to give them a fighting chance. After years of saving countless animals “on our own,” we finally decided to make it official and establish House of Misfits as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
Working in veterinary medicine, we know firsthand just how expensive lifesaving medical care can be. We also know how many animals find themselves in shelters with medical needs that exceed the resources available to them. Providing those animals with an alternative, and an opportunity to receive the extensive medical care they deserve, is the very foundation of our mission. None of it would be possible without the people behind the medicine. ❤️
Our veterinary technicians, alongside our incredible doctors, are truly the backbone of House of Misfits. Behind every complicated medical case, every sleepless night, every emergency intervention, and every seemingly impossible recovery, you’ll find a team of veterinary professionals who refuse to give up without a fight. They’re the ones monitoring critical patients, administering treatments, recognizing subtle changes, providing round-the-clock care, and offering comfort to animals who have often never known kindness. They are advocates, caregivers, problem-solvers, and, more often than not, the reason an animal gets to see another tomorrow. The lives we’ve saved aren’t just the core of our mission, they’re a reflection of the knowledge, dedication, compassion, and extraordinary teamwork of the people who bring that mission to life.
So, in honor of Veterinary Technician Week, we’d like to recognize the incredible technicians who help make House of Misfits what it is today:
Our HoM board technicians - Kimberly, Amber, and Melanie. Along with our board veterinarian, Dr. Leather, they’re the 3 behind every shelter pull, transport, email, Facebook post, fundraiser, and more.
Our licensed groomer and technician - Chris, who is always willing to volunteer her services on a whim to help an animal in need, and when she’s not giving expert spa treatments, she’s helping us on surgery days, flipping the OR and helping with intakes and treatments.
Our surgery technician - Jacob, who volunteers his Saturday once a month to help get us through 40 surgeries in one day, while always bringing words of encouragement and positivity, no matter how long and stressful the days seem.
We always say it takes a village. We are so thankful to have ours! Happy Veterinary Technician Week to our techs, and to all of the technicians out there working tirelessly to save the animals, day in and day out! We appreciate you! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
