☀️ Wellness Wednesday: Hot Pavement = Hot Paws! 🐾

Summer sunshine is great… but hot pavement can be dangerous for our furry friends.

Did you know asphalt and concrete can become much hotter than the air temperature and may burn paw pads in minutes? If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws!

🔥 Try the 7-second test:
Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it’s uncomfortable for you, it’s uncomfortable for them.

🐶 Summer walk tips:
• Walk during cooler hours (early morning or evening)
• Stick to grass or shaded paths when possible
• Watch for limping, licking paws, or redness after walks
• Bring water and take breaks in the heat

A little prevention goes a long way toward keeping tails wagging all summer long! ❤️

📞 WE’RE HIRING — VETERINARY RECEPTIONIST / CLIENT SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE 🐾

Hannibal Veterinary Clinic is looking for a full-time Veterinary Receptionist/Client Service Representative to join our team.

This position is much more than answering phones and checking people in. Our front desk team helps keep the entire clinic moving throughout the day while supporting clients, patients, doctors, and staff through both routine visits and emotional situations.

This is a busy position that includes:
🐶 Scheduling appointments
🐱 Answering phones and client questions
🐾 Checking patients in and out
💳 Collecting payments
🩺 Communicating with doctors and staff throughout the day
📋 Multitasking while staying organized and detail-oriented

We’re looking for someone who:
✔️ Communicates clearly and compassionately
✔️ Stays calm under pressure
✔️ Works well in a fast-paced environment
✔️ Is dependable and team-oriented
✔️ Is willing to learn and jump in where needed

Veterinary or medical receptionist experience is a huge plus, but we are willing to train the right person.

Position details:
• Full-time
• Four 10-hour shifts
• Rotating weekends
• Employee discounts + Be Well benefits after probationary period
• PTO after one year of service

We are a busy two-doctor practice with a supportive, team-oriented staff, and we’re looking for someone who wants to become part of that team long-term.

To our valued clients and community,

Veterinary medicine is an incredibly rewarding profession, but it is also emotionally, mentally, and physically exhausting. Behind every appointment is a team working hard to care for your pets while balancing emergencies, critically ill patients, staffing shortages, and an overwhelming patient load.

Like many clinics right now, we are doing our best to help as many pets as possible. Sometimes that means appointments run behind, lunches get skipped, and emergencies must take priority. We understand waiting can be frustrating, and we truly appreciate your patience and understanding during those moments.

We also want to gently remind everyone that we are a general practice — not a 24-hour emergency hospital. Our doctors and staff are human beings with families, responsibilities, and lives outside of work. The emotional weight carried in this profession is heavier than many realize, and compassion fatigue and burnout are very real struggles in veterinary medicine.

Please know this: we are here because we genuinely care about animals and the people who love them. Kindness and grace toward veterinary staff go further than you may ever know.

🐱 Wellness Wednesday: Cat Wellness Matters Too! 🐾

Jameson wanted to remind everyone that cats are masters at acting “fine,” even when they aren’t feeling their best. Many illnesses can go unnoticed until they’ve progressed, so even small changes at home can be important.

Keep an eye out for signs your cat may need to be checked:
🚽 Changes in litter box habits (urinating more or less, accidents, straining)
🍽️ Eating less — or suddenly eating more
💧 Increased thirst
😾 Hiding more often or acting withdrawn
🧼 Less grooming or a dull, unkempt coat
🤢 Vomiting more than occasionally
😿 Bad breath or drooling
⚖️ Weight loss or weight gain

Even subtle symptoms can point to common feline health issues like:
• Dental disease
• Kidney disease
• Diabetes
• Urinary problems
• Thyroid imbalance

🩺 Routine wellness exams and annual labwork help us catch problems early — when treatment is often easier, more effective, and more affordable.

🎗️🐾 Pet Cancer Awareness Month 🐾🎗️

Did you know cancer is one of the leading causes of death in older dogs and cats? While that sounds scary, the truth is that many pets can live longer, happier lives when cancer is found early.

Cancer happens when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably, forming tumors or affecting organs and blood cells. Some cancers grow slowly, while others can spread quickly—making early detection extremely important.

🔬 Common Types of Cancer in Pets:
• Lymphoma (often affects lymph nodes)
• Mast Cell Tumors (common skin tumors in dogs)
• Mammary Tumors (more common in unspayed females)
• Bone Cancer (often causes limping or swelling)
• Oral Tumors (can cause drooling, bad breath, trouble eating)

👀 Signs Pet Owners Should Watch For:
• New lumps/bumps or swelling
• Weight loss without explanation
• Decreased appetite
• Limping that doesn’t improve
• Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
• Coughing or labored breathing
• Bleeding or discharge from any opening
• Wounds that won’t heal
• Sudden behavior or energy changes

🩺 Why routine exams matter:
Many cancers are first detected during a wellness exam—sometimes before a pet shows obvious symptoms. Annual exams are great, but senior pets (7+ years) often benefit from exams every 6 months, along with routine bloodwork.

💡 Important reminder:
Not every lump is cancer—but every lump should be checked.

If you ever notice a change in your pet, don’t wait. Early intervention can mean more treatment options and better outcomes.
