Northeast Missouri Humane Society Because of your support, we’re able to give more than 2,000 homeless animals care, compassion & a second chance at a loving home every single year.

Our mission is simple- find them the loving family they deserve. Founded in 1966 on compassion as a Non-Profit 501 (c) (3), NEMO Humane Society currently cares for the lost, stray, injured, neglected and unwanted animals of five counties which include Marion, Ralls, Monroe, Shelby and Lewis. The Northeast Missouri Humane Society is committed to investing their expertise and resources in order to further achieve their cause. Their mission is to prevent neglect, abuse, cruelty, and overpopulation of domestic animals, to provide a network service to the lost or homeless, and to educate the public on problems that matter. They exist to make a difference. Each year they care for nearly 2000 homeless pets from the Northeast Missouri area. NEMOHS continues to have a contract with the City of Hannibal to provide a home for strays picked up by the city's Animal Control. The staff and board members take their responsibility very seriously, and appreciate the support of the community. Just imagine what we can achieve together! The possibilities are endless.

Meet Zena!

This sweet girl has had the lowest lows and now the highest highs!

She was found stuck on the inside of a dumpster with her left leg caught. Sadly, her leg had to be amputated but that did not stop her from being herself!

She loves playing with toys and relax on your lap. Her tail is half the size of what it is supposed to be from a previous injury.

Zena has had a big adventure and now ready to go to her forever home!
Will you come see Zena?

At the NEMOHS, we don’t just help animals find new homes. We help lost pets find their way BACK HOME to the families who love and miss them.

In 2025 alone, we reunited 146 lost pets with their humans!

Every share of a lost pet’s photo and every microchip can make the difference between a pet staying lost and finding their way home.

Is your pet microchipped? 🐾
If not, please consider making an appointment with us. It’s a simple little chip that can mean EVERYTHING when your pet goes missing.

Because sometimes, the happiest ending isn’t finding a new family….it’s getting back to the one you already have.
