🐾 A Little Look at What Could Be Next for Cowboys Dog Ranch 🐾

As Cowboys Dog Ranch continues to grow, we’ve been doing a whole lot of thinking about what the next chapter could look like.

We’ve tossed around quite a few ideas, adding onto our current building, building a second building toward the back of the property and turning the Ranch into more of a true doggy campus, or even building modern little mini cabins designed specifically for overnight boarding. 🐶🏡

If we went with another building, we’d love to create some really nice themed boarding suites along with comfortable indoor play areas where we could separate our pups into different groups based on their size, personality, and play style.

And of course, no matter which direction we go, everything would be built with the dogs’ comfort and safety first, air conditioning in the Virginia summer, heat in the winter, cameras, comfortable sleeping areas, and plenty of room to play.

But before we make any big decisions, we want to hear from y’all.

Cowboys Dog Ranch is a small, family owned business. We aren’t some big corporate chain, and we don’t ever want to lose that personal feel. A lot of the folks who bring their dogs here have been with us while we’ve grown, and your pups have become part of our Ranch family.

That’s why your opinion genuinely matters to us.

What would YOU rather see?
🐾 A larger doggy campus with themed boarding suites and indoor play areas?
🏡 Individual modern mini cabins for boarding?

I start meeting with contractors this week to look at our options, costs, and what makes the most sense for the property.

🐾🎄 HOLIDAY BOARDING IS STARTING TO FILL UP AT COWBOYS DOG RANCH! 🦃🎆

Thanksgiving might feel a little ways off, and Christmas and New Year’s even farther, but we’ve already started receiving holiday boarding reservations!

If you know you’ll be traveling during:

🦃 Thanksgiving Week
🎄 Christmas Week
🎆 New Year’s Week

we recommend reserving your pup’s stay sooner rather than later. Holiday boarding spots are limited, and once we’re full, we’re full!

🤠 FIRST TIME AT THE RANCH? HERE’S WHAT WE RECOMMEND:

Before your pup’s first overnight boarding stay, we recommend scheduling a Meet & Greet and bringing them for daycare at least once beforehand.

Why?

Dogs can experience stress when introduced to a brand new environment, especially when it also involves being away from their family overnight. Giving your pup a chance to visit beforehand lets them become familiar with the smells, sounds, staff, routines, and surroundings of the Ranch before their longer stay.

Daycare also gives our team a chance to get to know your dog’s personality, play style, comfort level, and social behavior so we can determine which appropriate play group they fit into.

And don’t worry, even if you prefer your dog to be boarded separately and kept separate from other dogs, we still recommend a daycare visit beforehand. The goal isn’t necessarily group play. It’s giving your pup an opportunity to learn.

“Hey, I’ve been here before. I know these people. I know this place.” 🐶❤️

That familiarity can help make the transition into boarding easier and more comfortable.

Around here, we don’t want the first time your pup walks through our doors to be the day Mom or Dad leaves town for a week. We’d rather let them come sniff around, meet the Ranch family, get comfortable and hopefully make a few four legged buddies along the way. 🤠🐾

🤠🐾 A LITTLE COWBOY WISDOM FROM THE RANCH…

Since opening Cowboys Dog Ranch, I’ve learned something:

Everybody “loves dogs” until loving dogs requires WORK. 😂

Doggy daycare and boarding applicants get ran through here like dirty socks. I’ve got a great team right now, but another one bit the dust today — and I can’t say I didn’t see it coming.

I knew we might be in trouble when I had to ask a grown adult why they used the last of the toilet paper and just left the empty cardboard roll sitting there instead of replacing it. 😂

Then about TWO HOURS into the workday:

“Can I go to McDonald’s? I’m hungry.”

Lord have mercy. 🤠😂

But here’s the bigger lesson I’ve learned.

A lot of people apply to doggy daycares because they picture themselves sitting around, petting puppies and taking cute pictures all day.

Then they come to Cowboys Dog Ranch and realize…

Oh.

Y’all actually WORK with the dogs here. 😂🐾

YES MA’AM. YES SIR.

We take them outside. 🌳
We play with them. 🎾
We rotate groups. 🐕
We clean rooms and crates. 🧹
We change water and bedding. 💦
We have structured nap times. 😴
We supervise play. 👀
We have pool days. 💦🐶
We clean up p**p — LOTS OF P**P. 💩😂
And then we turn around and do it all over again.

I’ve even had people come here from other daycare and boarding facilities and tell me they left because the dogs spent most of the day in rooms while employees sat somewhere else watching cameras.

That ain’t how we run this Ranch.

If you’re the type who wants to sit in a chair all day, eat french fries, stare at security cameras, and let the dogs spend their day looking through kennel doors…

Cowboys Dog Ranch probably ain’t your rodeo. 🤠😂

Matter of fact, I think I’ve invented my new interview process:

I’m leaving exactly ONE square of toilet paper on the roll.

After the interview, I’m checking the bathroom.

If you replace the roll without being asked…

Because sometimes work ethic is that simple.

It’s seeing something that needs to be done and DOING IT without somebody having to hold your hand.

We work as a team.
And most importantly, WE ARE INVOLVED WITH THESE DOGS. 🐾❤️

So don’t tell me you “love animals” and want to work with animals if you don’t have the work ethic, drive, patience, and GOOD ATTITUDE to actually put effort into them.

Dogs don’t need somebody who loves the IDEA of working with animals.

They need somebody willing to WORK for them.

A few days ago, a few folks had some opinions about some of the crates we had here at the ranch for nap time. 🤠🐾

And you know what? We listened.

We went out, found a supplier with some really nice new crates, and started upgrading. Our first delivery showed up around lunchtime today, and another delivery is coming this afternoon!

We may not be a giant corporation or a big nationwide franchise, and that’s OK with us.

We’re a small, locally owned dog ranch. We work hard, we listen to feedback, and when we see something that can be better, we make it better.

We’re not trying to be perfect. We’re just trying to make Cowboys Dog Ranch a little better every single day for the pups and families who trust us. ❤️🐶

Around here, a little criticism just gives these cowboys and cowgirls another fence to fix. 🤠

At Cowboys Dog Ranch, daycare isn’t just tossing a bunch of pups together in a room all day. We believe dogs need structure, supervised play, exercise, bathroom breaks, fresh air AND nap time. After all, even cowboys need to rest after a long day of playing. 😂🦴

MEET OUR NEWEST SHIFT MANAGER TAYLOR, here at Cowboys Dog Ranch. 🤠🐾

A little about me, animals have pretty much always been my thing. I have worked with dogs for years, starting out in veterinary medicine and most recently working with Border Collies doing bird and wildlife management. Working with the Border Collies was definitely a different experience and really made me appreciate working dogs and just how insanely smart they can be.

I have also worked with horses and farm animals and I currently have my own mustang, Mia, who is basically my giant toddler. I also have chinchillas and a few other critters at home, so even when I leave work I am still surrounded by animals. I am currently in college working towards my bachelor's degree in Animal Health & Behavior because apparently I haven't had enough animals in my life yet. ❤️

One thing I really care about coming into this position is making sure the dogs here are treated like someone's baby, because they are. I know how I am about my own animals and I want people to feel comfortable leaving their dogs with us knowing someone is actually paying attention to them. I want to learn their personalities, their weird habits, what they love, what they don't like and what makes them comfortable. Not every dog is the same and I don't think they should be treated like they are.

I'm excited to learn everything I can, bring some new ideas with me and get to know all of you and your pups. I definitely have a LOT of names and faces to learn.

🐾 THE BIG DOG CREW IS AT IT AGAIN 🤠😂

If you’ve ever wondered what the big dog group at Cowboys Dog Ranch does all day, it’s pretty simple.

Bark at each other. Chase each other. Take a break. Then bark at each other and do it all over again. 😂🐕💨

Around here, a little barking usually means somebody just officially challenged somebody else to a race around the Ranch.

These big pups love having room to run, play, socialize, burn off some energy, and just be dogs. By pickup time, we’re aiming for happy dogs and some tired paws. 🐾

If your big ol’ pup spends all day at home waiting for you to get off work, bring ’em out to the Ranch and let them join the crew. 🤠
