🕵️‍♂️ INSPECTOR STITCH ON THE CASE! 🔎🐈‍⬛

We had to bring in our most thorough, non-negotiable quality control officer for this one. Inspector Stitch has officially arrived to inspect this absolutely massive delivery of life-saving donations!

After extensive sniffing, paw-patting, and checking the inventory to confirm the high quality of these goods, he has given his official stamp of approval. 🐾📦

Look at this incredible haul! Our community really showed out to keep our outdoor colonies and fosters fed, happy, and cared for:

⚬ Mass quantities of dry food to keep bellies full
⚬ Stacks on stacks of wet food cases 0
⚬ Quality litter
⚬ Countless boxes of specialized supplies

To everyone who contributed, sent items off our wishlists, or dropped off supplies: Stitch and the entire TNR crew cannot thank you enough. Keeping colonies fed is a massive part of what we do, and this stockpile will help so many hungry cats across Hampton Roads.

Mission accomplished! Detective Stitch is now off to supervise the unpacking (and by "supervise," we mean sit inside the empty cardboard boxes). 📦🕵️‍♂️

A critical winter tip for anyone caring for outdoor community cats: Straw is for stray cats, hay is for horses!

When setting up outdoor shelters, the choice of bedding makes a massive difference in whether a cat stays warm or ends up dangerously cold.
Here is why the difference matters:

⭐️ Straw (Use this!): Straw consists of hollow, dry stalks from harvested grain. Because the shafts are hollow, they trap warm body heat and naturally repel moisture instead of absorbing it. Cats can burrow directly into clean straw to create a dry, insulated nest all winter long.

⭐️ Hay (Avoid this!): Hay is dried grass and clover meant for animal feed. Unlike straw, hay draws in moisture from the air, wet paws, and snow. It packs down flat, gets damp, molds, and will freeze solid into a block of ice right beneath the cat.

A quick reminder on blankets and towels: **keep them out of outdoor shelters too.** Fabric pulls moisture out of the air, gets wet, freezes, and will pull body heat right away from a sleeping cat.

A simple rule of thumb: If it can soak up water, leave it out. Fill shelters loosely with clean, golden straw so your neighborhood cats have a warm, dry refuge when temperatures drop.

A frequent question we get every week: "Can I bring a cat to your shelter?"

The short answer is no, because Tips N ToeBeans does not operate a physical shelter, sanctuary, or holding facility.

We are a 100% volunteer-run Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) group dedicated to community cat welfare. Because we do not have a building to house cats, our focus is squarely on humane population control and prevention right in the neighborhoods where outdoor cats already live.

Here is what that means:

What we do: We provide guidance on colony management, assist caregivers with trapping, and coordinate low-cost spay and neuter surgeries and rabies vaccinations so outdoor cats can return safely to their home territory.

What we cannot do: We do not pick up, intake, or relocate healthy community or stray cats. We simply do not have the kennels, staff, or facility to house them.

Why this matters: Removing cats from an area does not solve overpopulation. Without spay and neuter, new unfixed cats simply move into that territory and the cycle begins all over again. Fixing the cats who already live there keeps the population stable and stops endless litters of kittens from being born outdoors.

If you manage a colony or have community cats in your area that need help getting fixed, we are here to offer advice, trap resources, and support.

That tiny notch is actually a major badge of honor! It means that cat went through TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return), which is the gold standard for humane community cat care.

Here is what that tipped ear tells you:

* The cycle ends here: No more continuous cycles of unwanted litters being born outdoors.

* Healthier neighbors: The cat is vaccinated against rabies, spayed or neutered, and living a calmer life without the stress and fighting associated with mating behaviors.

* A stable community: TNR stabilizes outdoor colonies naturally, allowing community cats to thrive while numbers decrease over time.
