Good times since the fourth! I am so very grateful for the hospitality of Littlefoot's family. I had a blast making a firework display out of a bunch of smaller ones. A blast. Get it?

When going back to the trail we had to decide between getting on near Roanoke and the beautiful McAfee k**b or going back to the town called Bland. The former meant skipping a hundred miles of the trail, the latter just didn't sound exciting. We chose the k**b. We know we're going to have a better experience making that kind of decision, even if it means reluctantly lowering the Thru Hiker banner to the ground and becoming LASHers (long-ass section hikers).

We had a glorious experience at the k**b, followed closely by a cliff walk along Tinker Cliffs. I am bad at taking pictures, and don't really have much of the cliffs. I took one panarama I'll add as an addedum.

A few days of hiking later, we got some unfortunate news from Spoonfoot. He was ahead of us in the Shenandoahs and had gotten bitten by a snake! We had been contemplating jumping up to the Shanendoahs to do an aquablaze and meet up with some friends (including Spoonfoot) anyways, so we got out at the next town and made our way to Harrisonburg where Spoonfoot was.

Spoonfoot was doing ok, but in no shape to hike or even float in a canoe for a few days. His mom came down from New York, and we spent time in Harrisonburg and then Waynesboro waiting to see how the the injury healed. In that time we took a great day hike where I had my first encounter with a rattlesnake. I haven't felt a rush of adrenaline like that in years and years, if ever. I feel very lucky to have only pi**ed it off a bit. I stepped right next to it and was assaulted by the unmistakable sound. I always thought the rattle would last a couple of seconds and be roughly the volume of a maraca. It was LOUD and LONG and we got the heck out of there! I am pretty sure I would have won a long jump contest with my leap away.

Unfortunately, Spoonfoot was not recovering very quickly, and he made the call to go with his mom back to NY and rest up at home before figuring out his next steps. That left Littlefoot and I with another decision. We'd been toying with a few plans already: a flip flop, a 'best-of' plan, or going completely off trail. We knew that we were just not feeling excited about just hiking from there, and we had an opportunity to go north with Spoonfoot's mom. Getting a ride to NY would put us in range of Boston so we could have a home base to plan the next phase of our adventure. We decided to take the ride, and we were on the way to New Rochelle for a night.

It would have been a waste to be so close to NYC and not go, especially since Littlefoot and I share a love of theater. So we went! We entered the lottery for Hamilton and lost, but we found 50% off tickets for Matilda and had a fantastic time in some of the best seats I've ever had. The guy playing Ms. Trunchbull was a riot. I was a very happy camper.

A bagel and some pizza later, I'm now en route to Boston. We'll be there a few days before heading out. I hope to see a bunch of you in that time and regale you with tales of pooping in the woods. Then after that we'll see where the journey leads...

The journey has gotten a bit behind schedule, but that's ok! Just a couple of days after St. Lukes I managed to twist my ankle at camp. Now we're in Roanoke for a few days with LF's uncle and aunt, which is beautiful and peaceful. Jim and Pam have been incredibly generous with their home, time, and wonderful cooking. I'm extremely happy and thankful to be able to have continued adventures of all kinds!

After the Highlands we did something a bit different and got off trail for a weekend. We rented a car, and visited OH so Littlefoot could meet her new niece. At the same time there was also the Origins con that LF hadn't missed in a decade, so we went to that and I had fun trying to keep up in some RPGs.

When we went back, we ended up at a hostel called St. Lukes that was a farm looking to barter work for stay. We went there to meet up with Wizard, Jib Jab, and River Rock. We stayed there a few more days and waited with Jib Jab for a package. I built a firepit, mowed a few acres, and made several meals (including more bread!). Good times, but after that we went back to the trail!

North of Damascus we quickly reached the Mt Rogers national park and Grayson Highlands. Wild ponies roam here, they keep the balds clean. We were lucky to see a ton of them, including some that got very, very friendly!!

From the Highlands we actually did a small off-trail trip, more on that in the next post!

Ok I'm super behind so here's a bit from Damascus! More to come! We are doing some fun things, not all hiking though. In addition to the AT, Damascus also connects with the Virginia Creeper trail. We took the opportunity while in town to rent bikes and take in that experience.

After a couple days in town we hiked out of and camped under the giant trestles we rode on the day before. Glorious :).

We ended up staying at Boots Off hostel for several days. They are just starting up but doing great things already! Excited to see what things are like as they are finished. Spoon Foot came down from Damascus with his brother and some friends, we hung out at the lake. Little Foot and I then took turns being sick, then we slack packed a couple of days to get us back on track. Huge thank you to Jim, Jordan and Neil at Boots Off for their help!!

Closing in on Erwin, stayed at a new hostel called Hiker's Paradise and slackpacked yesterday.

In Hot Springs we ended up staying for a couple of days, then got a ride to Damascus for Trail Days. Well... I got a ride to an Enterprise and rented a car, then got 9 people (and packs!) in an SUV to get there. A little bit insane (sorry Mom!).

Trail Days is a festival for backpacking and basically everyone on the trail within a few hundred miles slows down, speeds up, shuttles or hitches to get there. There's a giant tent city where people camp. We were able to make a little village with many of our friends from our whole trail journey. There are vendors doing gear repair and giveaways and a collection of churches that do a ministry and provide services like showers, laundry, meals, first aid, and haircuts. Everyone from that group was incredibly kind and generous.

I wish I had taken more pictures during the festival, but I couldn't charge my phone very much. I'll just have to go back next year :).

We ended up being off the trail for almost a week, so we're kicking back into action. Here are some pictures from between Hot Springs and Erwin. Much love!
