Animal Aid Society

Animal Aid Society A happy place for dogs in transition between homes. Volunteer run since 1971. Animal Aid Society is an all-volunteer organization!

On average, the AAS volunteer force contributes 900 hours of every month, which translates to just under $275,000 annually in donated labor. Everyone from the daily dog walkers, the marketing team to the board members donates their time to create a safe haven for homeless dogs. That means that AAS is able to invest 100% of all donations and fundraising monies to provide for the dogs in their care.

To encourage this passion in future generations, AAS partners with community groups (scouts and athletic teams) to create volunteer and educational opportunities for local teens and young adults. Families with children are encouraged to come and walk dogs in their park-like facility as a bonding experience and volunteering opportunity all rolled into one. The rescue strongly believes that the connection and interaction of volunteers with the animals results in a higher level of healing for both the volunteers and the animals. From walking and socialization to fundraisers and adoption events, volunteers are integral to the day-to-day operation of the rescue. Much like the musician with the same name, our Jelly Roll swung for the fences with his transformation. Hardly seems like the same dog, but it is.

Jelly Roll was found wandering the streets - just a year old, covered with mats and neglected for quite some time.

We have found that some dogs who have been abused the most, love the fiercest. And that is Jelly Roll.

He sits so politely as he waits for you to notice him. And, when you do, he gets so excited. When you get close enough to him, he has this way of wrapping his front legs around you - and holding on. If you are sitting next to him, he gets right next to you and then links his front legs together around your arm. He doesn't want to be left behind yet again.

Despite a shaky start in life, Jelly Roll is happy. He loves to run around and play with toys. He adores watching the other small dogs in his section. And he was enthralled when he got to play with two of them.

Jelly Roll is free now - free from the hair and neglect that marked a good part of his first year. And he is ready - ready to live a life that is based on love and care, loyalty and nurturing.

If you have an endless amount of compassion for those who are trying to only see the best in us, please come meet our Jelly Roll. He is love and light in the body of an adorable poodle.

Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton. Open every day between 9AM and noon, including weekends and holidays.

At one year old and about 70 pounds, Adonis has fully committed to the aesthetic of “mythological guardian”:
Pointy ears, intense stare, and the kind of face that suggests he knows things, possibly ancient things.
You get the sense he could stand next to a flaming gate and really elevate the ambiance.
And then he meets you, and immediately forgets all of that, because you are a person, which means you are now his favorite thing in the universe.
Adonis doesn’t just like people -- he adores them with his entire being. He greets you like you’ve been separated for years, even if it’s been six minutes. He leans, he hugs, he offers kisses with great sincerity and very little regard for your center of gravity.
He is, in every way that matters, a marshmallow -- the reason your mother told you to never judge a book by its cover.
Also a baby. A large, enthusiastic, 70-pound baby who is still figuring out that humans are not structurally designed to absorb full-speed affection. With patience and gentle guidance, he is going to grow into that perfect contradiction -- a dog who looks like a warning sign but behaves like a weighted blanket.
Adonis came to us from a Vietnam veteran who loved him deeply and was heartbroken that life circumstances didn’t allow him to keep him. So this is a dog who has already known what it means to be someone’s whole world, and is ready to give that kind of love again.
What he needs now is someone who can see past the dramatic cover and appreciate the story inside:
A hard-looking softie. A hug enthusiast. A loyal companion who just wants to be close to his people and learn how to love them well.

THREE adoptions this week! Extra-lovable Tic Tac went home to forever hugs! He stopped hugging his new family just long enough to get this photo. Rio had a makeover just in time to go home with his adopters. It was a surprise to them, they chose him in his "rough" stage! And Shadow's adopters were meant to be! They lost their previous pup 2 years ago this month - and his name was Shadow! When they saw our Shadow on Facebook, they knew they belonged together!

Congratulations all!!

Don't worry, be happy - more than just a catchy lyric for Alex. It has become a way of life for Alex, a means to survive.

Alex starts each day with hope, but ends them with a touch of sadness. People have been coming to meet Alex, but they choose someone else. Each time.

He is so appealing - we just don't understand it. He has all the varied colors of an adorable beagle - the tri-color look PLUS, the blue tick look. His personality is completely endearing. He will slowly approach you and then lean right into you.

And then don't get us started on his eyes. When he looks up at you and just stares right into your heart. You will melt.

So what goes wrong. Well, there are two things we can think of. First, maybe it's because he is heartworm positive. We are pretty sure we have plenty of adopters who would say it's not that hard to guide them through treatment (all covered by AAS) and the reward is priceless.

The second reason is that people assume that Alex is so cute, he will surely be adopted so they look for another dog to adopt - maybe older, or less appealing.

But now it's Alex's turn. He is the one. He is four-years-old and a great size at 27 pounds. He is charming in the truest sense of the word.

Please help us make Alex's days happy - for the rest of his life. Please come meet this wonderful boy - you won't even have to work at being happy, it will just happen!

Two dogs taking a walk? Not quite. The one on the left has been in the shelter for 246 days. The one on the right was only in the shelter for a short time and is hosting his friend for a brief break from shelter life.

Boomer and Ernie - friends helping friends.

Boomer has been exceptional and is the perfect houseguest. Once he returns to shelter life, please come meet him. He needs more than just a brief break - he needs his forever home.

Boomer is at Animal Aid - 80 Butler Farm Road in Hampton!

Rango, at eleven, would like to formally object to the term "senior dog." If you check his file, you will see that he has attempted to have this designation removed on the grounds that it is clearly a clerical error.
Rango is a wirehaired terrier mix with a very organized philosophy of life, which goes as follows: play with squeaky toy, snuggle with human, repeat indefinitely. He executes this plan with impressive efficiency. There is no wasted time. If you sit down, Rango will arrive promptly for the snuggling phase. If a toy appears, he transitions smoothly into the play phase. Think of him as a highly motivated joy specialist.
What becomes clear within approximately twelve seconds of meeting Rango is that he absolutely adores people. Not in a casual, "hey, 'sup?" sort of way. No. Rango greets humans the way a small child greets an ice cream truck. His whole body participates in the event. His tail operates at a speed that suggests it may achieve lift.
He wants to be with you. Not hovering. Not demanding. Just nearby, very pleased that the two of you exist in the same universe at the same time.
And here is the thing about dogs like Rango.
Some people see the number eleven and think "senior dog." But that misses the point entirely. Senior dogs are not the leftovers of the shelter world. They are the directors’ cut. All the good parts remain - the love, the loyalty, the joy of a squeaky toy - but the nonsense has been edited out. The chewing of furniture. The chaotic puppy decisions. The belief that socks are food.
What you get instead is a dog who has figured out the important things. People are wonderful. Snuggling is essential. Life is better with a squeaky toy.
If you are looking for a dog whose greatest hobby is loving people with his entire cheerful heart, Rango would very much like to meet you.

His original name when he came to us was Clone. As in, if we could Clone this amazing dog, we'd all be happy for the rest of our lives.

Just look at him and his mischievous, beautiful smile. It draws you in and makes your wonder just what has he been up to. One recent day, he was up to taking advantage of an inadvertently open gate and joining some deer in the woods. It was someone who works for a fence company, ironically enough, that helped him find his way back to us. And Apollo loved every minute of it.

But what he loved most was returning to us - the people who have been his family for the past 112 days. We have all taken advantage of his hugs and his love and his antics and he has made each one of us feel better just by being himself.

For while Apollo loves adventure and intrigue, he loves people even more. He loves knowing someone is there to care for him and play with him and smile right back at him. He loves knowing he can just be with people, and not other dogs - while he enjoys other dogs from afar, people are his passion.

Apollo has been adopted out twice since he has been with us and we are desperately hoping that the third time is the charm and that the third time is the final time. He deserves that more than anything. The first time it was just not the right fit for Apollo and the second time, he really didn't enjoy sharing his life with another dog.

Apollo is three-years-old and he is just perfect. He is crate trained and house trained. We would clone him if we could.

There is a volunteer who is fighting for her life and she thinks that Apollo hung the moon, and she's not wrong. He is her inspiration - come see why and let him be yours.
